Ilon Mask confirmed that Tesla is working on an artificial intelligence processor
During the conference dedicated to the issues of machine learning of NIPS, Tesla's head Ilon Mask stated that his company is developing its own chip for the tasks of artificial intelligence.
- "I would like to make it clear that Tesla is serious about AI both on the software and hardware fronts," Musk said. "We are developing our own AI chips."
This statement can be considered as an official confirmation of the rumors circulating earlier that Tesla is creating chips for the tasks of artificial intelligence. In September, it was reported that about 50 employees of the company are working on this project. Among them is the respected industry veteran Jim Keller, who previously worked for AMD and Apple, and joined Tesla in January 2016 as vice president of Autopilot Hardware Engineering.
Specialized chips could help Tesla take the lead in the unfolded race to develop self-managed cars. Currently, the company uses NVIDIA graphics processors to provide self-management functionality in its electric vehicles. But its own hardware solutions will increase efficiency - accelerated calculations, theoretically, can improve road safety.
The release of its own AI chips can allow the company to achieve its goals for the implementation of fully independent vehicles faster. At the NIPS conference, Ilon Mask again confirmed ambitious plans for the production of self-guided vehicles with the highest Level 5 autonomy for two years. He also added that according to researcher AI Stephen Merity, artificial intelligence can become smarter than people in just 5-10 years.
