Little Waterloo Bay Cracked Egg

Sunset at Little Waterloo. I've seen a few of these giant split granite rocks. Like a giant egg that has cracked on the rocks below.

If anyone knows how this happens I'd love to hear it. I know water can seep in and freeze, pushing the rock apart, but it just doesn't seem likely in this region. And judging from the stain on the rock it looks (geologically) recent.
