Isalo Natural Window, Madagascar
When travelling around Madagascar you feel like you are the only tourist on the island. That is until, you stop at touristy locations. There was probably only 20-30 people here watching the sunset at Isalo National Park, but that feels like a huge crowd when the only other tourists you've seen are an elderly french couple staying at the same hotel.
I had this shot in mind before coming here and I was very lucky that I had a clear shot as people where walking across the frame constantly and getting selfies, or taking shots through the window.
Madagascar doesn't have the best reputation when it comes to tourist safety. Although we encountered nothing of the sort, this relatively remote location had an incident several years back when a tourist was robbed and their Malagasy driver and guide where beaten. Because of this, everyone arrives shortly before sunset and as soon as the sun has set, everyone starts to leave. Once this happens none of the drivers want to be left here alone so I couldn't stick around to shoot as much as I would have liked to.
I will point out as well that tourists are not allowed to hire their own cars and see the country alone. You must have a driver/guide to take you around. Although I was annoyed by this before going over there, as I like the freedom to explore and change my plans, the infrastructure and roads would be a nightmare without local knowledge and experience. It certainly is a must to have someone drive you around.

a really great photo...
Thank you!
Great shot! That looks like a really neat area to explore. Thank you for the information about how tourism works in the region, I have never looked into visiting Madagascar.
I would have loved to have the freedom to explore the area but unfortunately that isn't allowed. Maybe one day things will improve in Madagascar.
Great shot and it's awesome how the sun cooperate (this is just another way to tell that you put the sun in a perfect spot)!!
It lined up well with the rock in the foreground and the sun balanced out the thicker part of the window on the other side :)
Sounds like fun mate. Beautiful shot and rock formation.
I'm just another tourist ;)
Nothing wrong with that !
Very beautiful ! @kierastone,it is a rare place with natural beauty that at first I thought was drawn or artistic!
Thank you very much :)
Wow. Stunning! I've never made it to Madagascar, but I would love to go.
It's worth the effort to organise. No country has left a lasting effect on me like Madagascar.
