Sprouting in the Scrap Garden!?
I’m so excited! Even though out of a total of 12 lemon seeds, 5 avocado pits, and 2 celery plants, only 3 plants are showing definite signs of growth, I’m still happy to see progress! These may be terrible results, but I’m just happy I’m seeing results at all!
First, one celery rotted away and attracted a swarm of fruit flies but the other is planted in a new home and growing strong!
Second, all the lemon seeds refused to take. Boo.
But third and most importantly, two of the avocado pits are showing signs of life! One, planted in a small pot of dirt/compost, has split and is showing the smallest sprout ever (but it still counts)! The other, in a dish of water, has split and has a tiny root growing from the center! I’ve taken all of the pits inside as the weather is quickly getting colder!
Wish me luck!

tip on the propagation of citrus...peel the seed coat and that will help. When you rub the seed in your hand you will see a little layer it is like the shell on popcorn ..the part that gets stuck in your teeth...super thin. My husband learned this trick in nursery business.
happy day

Thanks! I read that you're supposed to suck off the goey layer from the outer shell so I tried that but next time I'll try peeling the seed coat!
you are very welcome! Just hope it works for you!
Woohoo! Take what you can get I say!
I think project diaries did something one preparing lemon seeds for planting and said he had good success.
Luck! It is amazing that you have plants at all and at this time of year too.
How cool! I should try this myself!
Good show! I'm excited for you.
I spent one spring attempting over and over to grow an avocado. Finally I got one to sprout and a few days later I found 2 much larger plants had actually sprouted out of my compost bin! In Colorado! Those 2 plants were huge and gorgeous, and started all by themselves!
I give you so much credit for this! I have tried, and tried, and tried some more to get romaine lettuce and other greens to re-sprout like this in the past.
Not sure why I am not able to but You go girl! This is great!
