प्रतिष्ठापित हो चुकी थी फिर भी दूल्हे के प्रति किसी
भी तरह की रियायत या पक्षपात नहीं किया जाता था।
आजकल तो लड़के के कुछ दोष मालूम भी हो जाएं तो ।

हमारी सामाजिक व्यवस्था के आदि नियामक महर्षि
मनु ने मनुस्मृति 3-2 में वर की प्रथम विशेषता ब्रह्मचर्य

में वे मनु स्मृति 3-4 में कहते हैं- ‘‘गुरु की अनुमति
से स्नान कर यथावत समावर्तन संस्कार के बाद ही
सवर्ण एवं शुभ लक्षणों से सम्पन्न कन्या से विवाह ।

की स्वीकृति प्रथम विशेषता थी अत: विवाह की
आयु 25 वर्ष तो लड़के की तय ही थी।लिंग पुराण में
कहा गया है- ‘‘सर्वप्रथम आयु का विचार करना
चाहिए और उसके पश्चात् अन्य लक्षणों का।' महर्षि
गौतम ने दूल्हे के पास सम्पत्ति, सौन्दर्य, विद्या, बुद्धि
और अच्छा कुल जरूरी माना था। महर्षि यम ने दूल्हे में
सात विशेषताएं जरूरी मानी थीं- उसका कुल उत्तम .
हो, शीलवान हो, स्वस्थ हो, विद्यावान उचित आयु
वित्तीय स्थिति सुदृढ़ हो और परिवार साधन सम्पन्न
हो। ये सप्त सूत्रात्मक विशेषताएं आजकल भी देखी
जाती हैं, कहीं कम तो कहीं ज्यादा।
