How Having Skin in The Game Makes the Steem Blockchain Even More Powerful

in #blog7 years ago

As you may have read in my last post, I began reading a book called Skin in the Game by Nassim Taleb. It's a fantastic read and it's so relevant to society and to business and economics and philosophy and really just everything in life.

I read the following quote and thought about the Steem blockchain:

“So, unlike the drug addict who loses his resourcefulness, what you learn from the intensity and the focus you had when under the influence of risk stays with you. You may lose the sharpness, but nobody can take away what you’ve learned. This is the principal reason I am now fighting the conventional educational system, made by dweebs for dweebs. Many kids would learn to love mathematics if they had some investment in it, and, more crucially, they would build an instinct to spot its misapplications”

Having Skin in The Game - for those of you who don't know - means that you have something to lose. That you're carrying some sort of risk for your actions.

A great example that Taleb uses to describe Skin in the Game is Hammurabi's code.. In the code (which is a set of laws from thousands of years ago), if a builder built a house that fell and crushed the people inside, then the builder would be subject to death for having done a poor job.

That's Skin in the Game - putting some of your own skin behind your work and saying that you approve it because of the risk that you ensue if it doesn't hold up.

How does this all apply to the Steem blockchain?

Well, I'm so mentally entrenched in the Steem blockchain, that it seems all these principles of Skin in the Game apply directly to Steem.

I have this notion in my head that one of the things that makes this blockchain so superior to others is not just it's speed, efficiency and other technical aspects, but also the fact that all the hardcore Steemians live on the blockchain.

I mean, we spend all day on this blockchain. Talking to each other, commenting, making posts, reading content, developing tools and dApps...

We all have serious Skin in the Game - not just financial (although, many of us do), but also emotional and intellectual Skin..

This blockchain is so superior for a lot of reasons, but one of the main reasons, in my opinion, is that we've all got a significant level of Skin in the Steem blockchain and we all want it to succeed for levels that run far beyond the financial.

This blockchain is indeed something special , I’m proud to be a part of it. I keep on talking about it to others , I don’t care if they think I’m wrong because steemit feels so right to me

Of course!! people will always resist the new mediums and technologies --> people thought the internet was going to fail!! Just keep doing what you believe to be right and you will succeed my friend!

Blockchain is very superior now, as you say many people spend their time here and do various activities.

Totally agree with you as I fee as if I live on the blockchain with the experiences we create froor and with the community. I think that like another book from Taleb, we could live another Black Swan Event where fiat use is disrupted in favor of cryptos which could change Steem forever as well!
