Nikiszowiec - magical place
Nikiszowiec (Nikischacht) is an old workers' quarter in Katowice, Poland, built in the beginning of the 20th century for hard-working Silesian miners. It has an extremely interesting architecture and layout.
The red window panes are traditionally painted that way, because back in the day the red paint was the only color one could steal from a mine.
The houses are of brick, and remind me of north England mining towns.
The yards inside are quite large.
People grow characteristic ivy on their back walls.
Today Nikiszowiec is still inhabited and apart from antique facades, has modern elements.
We arrived during the traditional Christmas Market. The crowds were huge.
There's also an antique Church under the Saint Anna.
Fortunately, most streets were not that crowded.
After exploring Nikiszowiec, we went for some traditional Polish food to "Chata z Zalipia"
I love the shot with the ivy . . .
