DIY Light Bulb Terrariums

in #diy9 years ago

Okay, so I will go ahead and apologize for my absence the last two weeks but I am back and ready to craft!! While I was away I made some super adorable hanging light bulb terrariums! They are great for those who don't have the greenest thumb in the garden.

Materials

  • Tiny Rocks
  • Light bulbs with a wide top
  • Mini Succulents
  • String
  • Mod Podge or a lighter (Optional)
  • Funnel (Optional)

For the mini succulents I used these which we bought from our local hardware store.

Step One

Take your tiny rocks and, if you choose, the funnel and fill the light bulb about 1/3rd with the rocks. Make sure you have taken apart your light bulb. I honestly had my grandfather whack it with a bunch of sharp tools but here is a link with the instructions of how to clean out your light bulb that we followed- http://www.teamdroid.com/diy-hollow-out-a-light-bulb/

Step Two

Prepare your succulents. The ones I used were easy to peel in order to fit into the top of the light bulb.

Step Three

Gently push your succulent into the top of your light bulb.

Step Four (Optional)

I used a pointy object, a pen or pencil will do, and gently pushed my plants upright and buried them a little into the rocks.

Step Five

Cut a line of string to tie around the top of your light bulb. Tie a tight knot around the metal part of the light bulb.

Step Six (Optional)

I used both the mod podge and the lighter just to be safe. I burned the end of the knots to make sure they stayed together, like you would a friendship bracelet we all have had at one point that we wouldn't want to come off. Then I used the mod podge just to make sure the rope stayed in place. I simply painted it over the already tied string and burned knot.

There you have it, your very own light bulb terrariums! These look good in any location you put them just make sure they get some sun. The succulents I used only require to have a light mist once a week. I loved making this DIY because I am probably one of the BIGGEST plant lovers to join steemit and I believe everyone should have a little green in their house so try it out and as always if you do I would love to see some pictures! :)
