Weird but true facts..........

in #life7 years ago (edited)

I'm going to start a blog on weird but true facts, starting with today's weird fact....female kangaroos have three vaginas.

Yes, you read it right. Apparently though this strange trait is shared by all marsupials ( these are mammals that raise their young in pouches.) Tasmanian devils, koalas and wombats all share this three vagina structure.

The side ones actually carry the sperm to the two uteruses ( male marsupials have two-pronged penises), while the vagina in the middle is where the joey travels down to it's life
outside.

On the illustration you will notice that the ureters carrying urine from kidneys to bladder, pass through the gaps between the three tubes.
In placental mammals, the ureters develop differently and don't go through the reproductive system. The reproductive tubes become one single vagina.

This may explain why marsupial embryos are born at a premature stage of development. A kangaroo's joey is a similar size to jellybean by the time it leaves the vagina, and it is a long crawl into the pouch. Perhaps this is why with such a narrow birth tube, the embryo is so small when it is born.

The unusual reproductive trait enables a female kangaroo to be perpetually pregnant. Whilst one joey develops inside the pouch, another embryo is held in a uterus, waiting for the joey to leave. So in actuality the mother can have an older joey outside the pouch, one in the pouch, and one waiting in a uterus to be born. Amazing!

P.S would this recipe meet the keto requirements? See I still haven't forgotten but it's harder than I thought to create something suitable!

Very interesting article!

I did not know this. I'm following for more. Good facts, well-presented.

Thank you, there will be more. 😀

Nature is truly fascinating. Each species has its own unique quirk and just when you thought you know them all already, you will suddenly come across new information (similar to this). This is why I enjoy watching shows in National Geographic, more than those dramas series in our local television channels.

Thank you for sharing!

Glad you like it. I'm going to post more. That just caught my eye. 😀
