The young Abraham Lincoln developed a great talent for imitation, perhaps emulating the preachers he listened to and mostly avoided, he let himself be conquered by the art of oratory. Free from attraction to frivolous women and drink, he became a regular visitor to the shop in the nearby town of Gentryville. There he became known as a brilliant storyteller of invented stories.

Tall and physically powerful like his father, Lincoln played as Mark Twain with the dream of becoming a skipper on the nearby Ohio River but in 1830 his family moved again. Lincoln was 21 years old. Lincoln stayed with her family for a while and helped her move to Macon County, Illinois.

During this time thanks to the offer of a Denton Offutt had the opportunity to participate in the construction of a barge and navigate it along the Sangamon River from Springfield to New Orleans but concluded this exciting task and with his family already established that it was time to become independent. After a time of indecision in 1831 a house was built in New Salem, a remote village located about 30 kilometers northwest of Springfield. There he studied law and grammar while employed in the most diverse jobs.

He worked at the Denton Offutt store for a while and then accepted the task of managing a mill, then he managed a store together with the owner who left him with debts when he died. After paying off these debts, Lincoln held jobs as interim postmaster and then as a commercial expert, forcing him to travel throughout the county widening his circle of friends. At the same time, he began to monitor information related to national politics.
