Market Friday: local boat race in Nongkhai, แข่งเรือยาวที่หมู่บ้านในหนองคาย

This is my very late #marketfriday! Time and life have been going through a whirl wind of events and emotions. The unsetlling energy made it impossible to concentrate on any posting. But I could not miss joining the lovely @dswigle weekly #marketfriday though I still feel as if I was still on Uranus.

This year the level of the river has gone down a lot which meant that the rowers had a long walk to their boats. But the calm river with slow current made it much easier for rowers to control their boats. There were almost thirty teams in this year competition. The race started in the afternoon and lasted until the evening. Like any races in Thailand, villagers would improvise betting system which attracted lots of spectators and gamblers from other villages.

The local authority and village committee were responsible for organising the annual boat race with prize money and trophies. Our local team used to win top prizes in the past, but other teams had started to hire strong men either from the military or Laotian workers to row their boats. So, it became more difficult to win the first or second position as these local rowers used to achieve. In the past, other teams used to be quite fearful of the strength and power of these young men.

The atmosphere started to get warmer after the first race took off. Children and adult spectators crowded by the railing to get a better view while older people started yelling for their team. Each team came with its own team of managers and entourage including its own kitchen crew, as the army marched on its stomach.

The children seemed to be having a great time with the village fair, getting together with friends and enjoying the boat race. I hope these children would become village’s rowers in the future.

นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่เราได้ไปดูบรรยากาศ การแข่งเรือของหมู่บ้านในหนองคาย หลายปีก่อนเราเคยไปดูการแข่งเรือยาวที่ในตัวเมืองหนองคาย ตอนที่นํ้าเต็มตลิ่งและไหลเชี่ยวมาก ปีนี้เป็นครั้งแรกที่เห็นการแข่งเรือในขณะที่ระดับน้ำลดลงมาก ทำให้การแข่งเรือไม่อันตรายเหมือนเมื่อก่อน แต่คนพายเรือต้องเดินไกลมากเพื่อไปลงเรือแข่ง บรรยากาศเริ่มครึกครื้นในตอนบ่าย เมื่อการแข่งเรือคู่แรกเริ่มขึ้น เด็กๆและชาวบ้านดูรื่นเริงและสนุกกับงานออกร้านมากมาย ที่มีเกมส์ให้เล่นและของกินหลายอย่าง พอเริ่มแข่งเรือทุกคนก็เดินไปเกาะกลุ่มที่ราว เพื่อลุ้นทีมของหมู่บ้านตนเอง ส่วนพวกผู้ใหญ่และนักพนันก็ลงไปยืนที่ริมตลิ่ง พร้อมตะโกนเสียงดังมาก งานนี้คนที่แพ้พนันคงอยากลงไปว่ายน้ำเลยทีเดียว การแข่งขันมีตั้งเกือบยี่สิบทีม ก็แข่งกันจนเย็นเลย แต่ละทีมก็มีชุดทำครัวมาเอง เขาต้องทำอาหารเลี้ยงคนเกือบร้อยในแต่ละทีม

There were both the small rowing boats and the full size boat for up to sixty rowers.

After the boat race, there was live music and a night long party at the village fair ground. I could hear the music from my house. For smaller children who were too young to get excited by the race, an enterprising villager found a way to make money by entertaining them among banana trees.

งานแข่งเรือเป็นวัฒนธรรมพื้นถิ่น ของคนอีสานที่ใช้ชีวิตอยู่กับแม่น้ำ เป็นการสร้างภูมิปัญญาในเรื่องการต่อเรือยาวแบบโบราณ การแข่งเรือช่วยเรื่องความสามัคคี และการมีนํ้าใจนักกีฬา แต่สภาพทางสังคมและสิ่งแวดล้อมเปลี่ยนแปลงเรื่อยไป เราก็ไม่รู้ว่าในอนาคต จะยังมีคนรุ่นใหม่ที่ต่อเรือแบบนี้เป็นหลงเหลืออยู่หรือเปล่า และคนรุ่นใกม่อาจจะไมอยากทนลำบากต้องมาซ้อมพานเรือกันในตอนเย็น แต่เราก็หวังว่า ประเพณีการแข่งเรือคงมีอยู่ต่อไปอีกสักสามสิบปี
