Beautiful Sunday: new student crept quietly into my English class, เด็กใหม่แอบมานั่งเรียนในชั้นอย่างเงียบๆ
This is my entry for #beautifulsunday created by @ace108. Oh! How times kept slipping through my fingers so fast. I could hardly kept up with the list of things to be done. This Sunday is my third experiment in teaching English to villagers’ children in Nongkhai,
To my surprise, there were the same number of student in total of nine, though the faces have changed a little. One kid who missed my class last time brought a new friend with him this time . They started to disrupt the class but I continued to observe whether they had the intention to learn or just wanted to play. There were altogether five kids who I have decided to let go in my next class. The older boy who brought a new friend: they both have to go as they were not ready to learn. The boy’s father ordered him to come that’s why he was quite bored. What’s more he is now in grade six at school, but he could not read or write. That means he never learned the alphabets properly and the school just let him passed all his tests. This is a relatively new phenomenon in Thai education system; there has been a policy to punish teachers for letting any students fail their exams in schools. This new education system has been designed to dumb children down intentionally, while parents are just too busy to pay attention to their children’s learning difficulties.
Three smaller children at primary school grade three will also have to leave my class. They could not read nor write English alphabets so they just sat there looking at their friends and drifted off. They were supposed to be able to read and write the alphabets in grade one. Again, their teachers let them passed their tests. On the other hand, this showed me the effect of neglecting parents and problems with very lazy and stubborn children. The problem tended to be much worse in cases of rich families as rich people believed they could solve all problems with money.
So, my next class would be quite a shock to their parents as I sent their children back for lacking basic requirements for joining my class. My original intention was to have about five or six students from grade 4 or five with basic knowledge in reading and writing English alphabets. I did tell one of the parents who watched my class for an hour to let those parents of the five children that they could not read or write the alphabets. The boys in the class told me that they all learned these during the third year of kindergarten; they had to practice writing in special exercise books. So, I asked that parent to tell the others to buy these exercise books for the children and make them finish those exercises . We just have to wait and see what would happen next! Could those parents accept their own part in bringing up illiterate children?
อาทิตย์นี้เป็นครั้งที่สาม ที่เราทดลองสอนภาษาอังกฤษให้เด็กๆในหมู่บ้าน ครั้งนี้เริ่มมีปัญหาที่แสดงออกชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น และเราจำเป็นต้องแก้ปัญหาในครั้งต่อไป เด็กชายที่ขาดเรียนครั้งก่อน แอบเอาเพื่อนเล่นมานั่งเรียนด้วย สักพักก็เริ่มเล่นกันเสียงดัง และก่อกวนเพื่อนๆ ที่พยายามตั้งใจเรียน เราก็คอยเตือนให้ลดเสียงลง โดยเราไม่ได้ดุ เพราะอยากจะรู้ว่านิสัยที่แท้ของเด็ก และเด็กมีความสามารถเพียงใด ตอนนี้เราสรุปได้แล้วว่า ในครั้งหน้าเราต้องให้เด็กออกไป 5-6คน เด็กชายที่อยู่ประถมหกสองคน แต่อ่านและเขียนตัวหนังสือภาษาอังกฤษไม่ได้ และ เด็กเล็กอีก 3 คนที่อยู่ประถมสาม อ่านหนังสือและเขียนตัวหนังสือไม่ได้เช่นกัน
ความตั้งใจตั้งแต่เริ่มคือ เราอยากสอนเด็กที่ขยันเรียน สัก5-6คน เพื่อช่วยส่งเสริมให้เขามีโอกาสแข่งขันกับ เด็กนักเรียนในเมืองหลวงที่เรียนในโรงเรียนแพงๆได้บ้าง เราได้บอกให้คุณแม่ของเด็กคนหนึ่ง รู้ว่าเด็ก5คน เป็นเด็กที่อ่านและ เขียนหนังสือไม่ได้ และมห้นีบไปซื้อสมุดฝึกคัดลายมือมาให้ลูกๆ ทำเป็นการบ้านโดยด่วน เด็กที่เก่งในชั้นเรียน บอกว่าทุกคนต้องเรียนตั้งแต่อยู่อนุบาล3. นี่ก็ทำให้เห็นปัญหาของระบบการศึกษาไทย ที่ถูกออกแบบ เพื่อทำให้เด็กฉลาดน้อยลงไปเรื่อยๆ พวกล่าอาณานิคมก็จะได้ล่าเป็นเมืองขึ้นทางเศรษฐกิจได้ง่ายหน่อย.
We give children some fruits and Thai sweet after class as a reward for paying attention in class. My gardener is very fond of children and a very good cook.
ระบบใหม่บังคับให้ครูต้องให้นักเรียนทุกคนผ่านการสอบ เพราะเป็นนโยบายของรัฐบาล พอมาผสมกับปัญหาผู้ปกครองไม่มีเวลา หรือความสามารถในการเอาใจใส่บุตรหลานด้วยแล้ว สถานการณ์ก็ยิ่งแย่ลงไปมาก ผลลัพธ์ที่เราเห็นคือ เด็กเกเรไม่ไปเรียนหนังสือ ติดเพื่อน และเริ่มดื่มเหล้า สูบบุหรี่ ตามด้วยติดยาเสพติด เด็กท้องแต่วัยเรียน ต้องออกจากโรงเรียนมาทำงาน และเลี้ยงลูก บางคนก็ติดคุกเพราะเสพยา สรุปเรากำลังเข้าสู่ยุคเสื่อมในทุกด้าน เหมือนในพุทธทำนาย ผู้ดีจะเดินตรอก ขี้ครอกจะเดินถนน นํ้าเต้าจะจมลง แต่กระเบื้องจะลอยน้ำ ภัยพิบัติใหญ่มากกำลังจะมา. ขอให้เริ่มเข้าหาพุทธศาสนาเพื่อเตรียมพร้อมรับมือกันให้ทันการ. ทุกอย่างจะเริ่มส่อเค้าล่งในปีหน้า

It’s really worse than nonsense! It destroy a whole generation of young kids!
I have met young teenagers at university who could not read nor write Thai properly! So, English was non-existent to them!

Ohhh, such beautiful young people. I look at them and... wonder... i can't put it in words. I liked school when i was young and when i went back to college at 32 years old. I never really wanted to leave college. I was afraid i couldn't be a professor. Your classroom looks so nice!
I loved the school campus and the buildings and trees and walkways. All the people to see and meet some. pretty girls and having lunch and walking to class.
There's a thing of wonder and amazement of the earth and the world and learning something new and hearing about something fantastic. Much of school was the "hard work" like learning alphabets and practicing. But then there was taking this and creating something. Like writing a poem or in these children case perhaps talking to a traveler in english? How fun would it be for me to speak to the people there in their own languages. For me i didn't learn any languages but i did learn about art and painting and see the arts there and anywhere and can connect to people that way perhaps.

I think you would make a very good art teacher for kids! If you were nearby, you could give a drawing class from time to time! These kids cannot draw yet! They are afraid to draw as it seems very difficult for them!
This is an experiment for me as I have never taught small kids like these! Most of the are very delightful ad sweet, some are very timid!
I have to learn to be gentle to small kids!

Very interesting situation there sir kaminchan! It is hard to believe that parents would let their kids not be taught and it is even more shocking that the schools pass them along without knowing how to spell! That is all hard to understand why.
