Why I'm playing less Steem Monsters - The Grind Ends Today!

Hey Guys, just a quick update on why you'll see less of me in the near future. Yes, I've decided it's time to stop grinding through the Steem Monsters Quests and Seasons in the hope that one day my teams can compete at the top.

I know that ain't gonna happen without more capital investment and more time.

And both are in short supply right now.

You see I feel the Hero's Journey has kinda 'died' in this game. What was once a clear path to max level decks has turned into a mismatch of additional cards that quite frankly I'm not too excited about.

My goal was and still is a max level team, so I can compete at the top, but getting a max level Rusty Android wasn't my idea of success.

It's just no fun anymore.

Oh, and sure I can try selling my quest rewards for Beta cards to max my teams, but then I'd just contribute to the dumping of cards on the market. (Which is getting insane)

I think my turning point was when SM decided to cancel the idea of booster rewards for a season, based on some outrage in the community that card prices would continue to fall.

In reality those prices were falling because of a low STEEM price, and lack of momentum to recruit new players.

When you look at what SM is giving out now during a normal season, it's actually a lot more cards than was distributed before. Doh!

The one thing that appealed to me in the game was earning XP for battles played, and sure it was only ever talked about earning for tournaments, but it seems that path is dead too.

So the only way I'm going to complete my hero's journey is if I stop playing the game, and focus on earning extra income to support my Steem Monsters habit.

And I'm not sure quiting a game to complete a Hero's Journey was ever in the 'Game Developers Handbook'.

But it is what it is.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not giving up on the game just yet.

I'm still excited to see what the Automated Tournaments brings (please reward more than Top 4)

And Steem Monsters is still the best thing that ever happened to the STEEM blockchain. It's just anytime I have to spend on Steem Monsters should be focused on growing the player base, and I think you should too.
[LOL, I got called a Douchebag for suggesting this before so take it as you will]

We have been getting trapped in the Fixed Mindset syndrome many investors have - protect what you have, limit cards, to raise prices.

Whereas a Growth Mindset knows that increasing the player base means those prices will naturally increase through increased demand.

Giving away packs was a genius move to get new players into the game and started on their Hero's Journey.

But giving away reward cards that require the core set to play. Not so much.

On my estimations the Beta cards would have lasted another 4 months at the rates they were being consumed, and this would have left the path open to actually sell the boosters we now refer to as 'Reward Cards'

That would have kept us on a path to sustained growth, and taken us strongly into the Auto Tournament phase with a solid player base. ( I feel it's plateaued now, with new players coming in barely replacing disgruntled players who are dropping off)

Anyway, enough dreaming of what could have been, as it's in the past now.

I'll still try to find ways to promote Steem Monsters in my spare time, after all I am one of these players holding a small bag of cards, and will benefit from it's success.

The future is bright, but Steem Monsters must find it's way onto the growth path again, and disregard the whims of investors who with their Fixed Mindset's are sadly controlling the direction of this game.

Just remember happy players are naturally going to spread the word about Steem Monsters more quickly than a few investors, trying to convince other investors Steem Monsters is a sound investment.

Let's treat it like a game first, and make the financial gains a secondary benefit.

After all we are going to the same Moon!

Beautifully put. For the game to truly succeed, it must find mass adoption. Game players first and foremost want playability and an organic path to grow that isn't heavily entrenched in the pay to play or pay to win mindsets.

Thank-you. And thanks for your support on my posts.
Mass adoption for the WIN!

Great points. I dont mind the reward cards, they're exciting. But I wish the end of season rewards was beta packs or a mix of both

Yeah, I know. Yeah something to keep us leveling up. I hate the idea of dumping cards to level up the ones I really need.
Maybe we'll need to start demanding the XP increases they promised us ;-)

I'm still very new to it all... but you're saying that the Reward cards have to be in a deck because they're too good, and you'd rather stay true to your splinter?

Nah I'm saying you really need the Beta or Alpha cards to:-

  1. Earn the Reward Cards
  2. Summon them

Earning reward cards by themselves isn't going to help you compete in tournaments. And that's why people are just dumping them. You need summoners, and those you absolutely need to purchase.

Some reward cards are great but having 100 of them is pointless without having more than a level 1 summoner.

Ah, so previously did people win non-reward cards at the end of a season, or did they win Steem or something?

It's a long story...

  • First we had beta packs as season rewards
  • Then quests were introduced with 1 pack reward per quest
  • Then quest and season rewards were replaced with reward cards

So for the first few seasons, people could actually level up their teams, which was great.
But then the bots moved in and packs were going out too quick. And even though actions were taken to make it harder to bot, the pack rewards were still taken away.

It was deemed to easy to win a pack for a quest, but now some people are winning an equivalent 3-4 packs per quest. Whilst some only win 1 card.

Personally, i'd like to see a compromise of packs for season (even if it was half of what was offered before) and reward cards for quests.

Oh this is sad! I used to enjoy your new season card reviews..

I guess they should have stuck to most of the original plan and then build on top of them, like gaining XP from tournaments and stuff like that. Lots of changes happening, hope it works out in the end. It's generally a feeling of 'rich get richer' now but well I do enjoy playing now and then but I'm not sure how a new user will cope.
Hope the future is brighter and I do agree steemmonsters is one of the great things to have happened to the steem blockchain.

Hey thanks for those kind words and I will finish the series.
I'm just playing less, and promoting more. And yes gaining XP should really be implemented as was the plan, when I originally bought into it.
PS: New users are struggling with the bots in the lower levels and with no pack or XP rewards to help them level up, there only choice is to invest more and that's giving us a 'pay to play' stigma.

ah that's good to know :) Yup, frustration can easily get to you when you lose continuously and will greatly impact acquisition of new users, hope there will be some workaround in the future.
