AAA Review - Weathering With You 天気の子

Weathering with you is the follow up anime film by Makoto Shinkai after the critically acclaimed blockbuster Your Name. With such a success in the previous anime film, there are huge expectations from fans for a bigger, better, and more wow production. Some might love this film, but others may be a little disappointed with it. I am the latter, just because the expectation was too big to be filled.

Quick Summary

Weird weather is hitting Japan and the country had been suffering for prolonged rainy season for months. Runaway schoolboy Hodaka was living with and working for Mr Suga at a small publishing company when he met Hina while investigating unnatural phenomenon for the company.

Hodaka soon discovers Hina's ability to clear the sky and bring out the sun, although only for small area, when she prays. The duo decides to start a business out of it and became highly successful.

But Hina's magical ability was shortlived and she began to suffer the effects from over usage. She explained to Hodaka that her existence is the cause of the strange rainy weather and for it to stop, she will have to disappear and return to the sky. Hodaka is never going to let that happen as he goes all out to bring her back.

Review

Your Name, the previous film by the creators, is such a perfect anime film with its superb plot, that it outshines Weathering With You completely. I can't help but compare the two and was left slightly disappointed after leaving the cinema.

The plot of Weathering With You is a little weak. Like the previous film, it deals with super natural powers/abilities. But I felt it was over the top when it introduces heavenly deities and dragons. It just felt unreal, especially when the setting of the film is in modern Tokyo. Makoto Shinkai tries to employ the similar formula but it just felt short of creating the same effect for viewers.

Cinematography wise, the production team had done a similar, if not better job. The show was visually stunning. Rain and water is a big element in this film and it is never easy to portray them realistically. Weathering With You did that stunningly.

The main characters Hodaka and Hina were also underwhelming and less memorable compared to Taki and Mitsuha in Your Name. But the supporting characters were better in Suga and Natsumi. Both were funny and probably outshone the main characters.

Weathering With You relies on the success of the 2016 Your Name as its biggest marketing asset. It is unlikely that me and many others would have watch this film if it didn't come from the same creators. By its own, this anime film would be a great watch. But if you are expecting to see a similar film as its predecessor, then you may be disappointed.
