AAA Review - Raising Dion - Netflix latest superhero show

The latest superhero TV show is a Netflix Originals, Raising Dion, is not a Marvel or DC franchise, no big names cast (except for Michael B Jordan), and no high quality CGI effects. I had only chanced upon this show while browsing the Netflix catalogue. After reading the synopsis, I decided to give it a try as it reminded me of another TV series many years ago, Heroes.

Quick Plot

Dion is a seven years old who had just moved to a new neighbourhood with his widowed mother. His father was a scientist who had tragically passed away while chasing a storm in New Orleans. Dion is having a hard time adapting in his new school while his mother, Nicole is struggling to find a job.

Soon, Nicole started discovering Dion's hidden powers. He was able to levitate objects and teleport. More powers like healing were discovered afterwards by his godfather, Pat, who is a close friend of the family.

Keeping Dion's new found powers in secret becomes the number one priority for Nicole and she would train Dion to have more control over the powers which has close relation to his emotions. While investigating her husband's death with Pat, Nicole discovered there were more people with super powers. All of these people were in presence at a Aurora viewing event in Iceland, where her husband and Pat were there too.

As we see some of these people appearing and helping Dion, a dark secret from one of them is slowly revealed. This person pose a great danger to Dion and Nicole will do everything she can to protect her son.

Review

Unfortunately. Raising Dion is nothing like Heroes. The superpowers here are minuscule and it is not about good powers vs evil powers. I would say this show is more similar to Stranger Things, without the horror. Therefore, Raising Dion is very suitable for all ages.

A good performance by the newcomer Ja’Siah Young playing Dion, as well as Alisha Wainwright as Nicole. Both had good chemistry especially the younger actor. But the best performance turns out to be Jason Ritter as Pat, who is always helping the family and had a crush on Nicole.

The show had a few good starting episodes and progressing really well as we see secrets being uncovered and Dion starting to control his power, and also new characters with powers appearing. But I really hated the ending, it is so anti-climax. Many might say it is an unexpected twist, but I think it is in a bad way. Totally killing one of the most well-liked character in the show.

We can almost expect another season of Raising Dion as there are still many unexplained plots. More characters with powers should also emerged and hopefully, we can see more powers fights!
