AAA Review - Fractured (2019) - Netflix latest Mystery and Thriller twister

Mystery/Thriller are not my favourite genre of movie because I don't like too much thinking at the end. The newest Netflix movie Fractured is such a film with multiple twists and an ambiguous ending. Think of Shutter Island, The Usual Suspects, Inception, etc for similar movies. However, Fractured is a lesser production not good enough to even rank side by side with those classics. The closest film I can think of that is comparable is probably Flightplan, a 2005 drama thriller.

Quick Plot

Ray Monroe (played by Avatar's star Sam Worthington) was travelling with his family, wife Joanne and daughter Peri, when the accident occurred at a gas station. Both Ray and Peri fell into a construction site while avoiding a stray dog and the little girl suffered with a broken arm. The parents quickly send them to a nearby hospital.

After long waiting hours, Peri is finally attended to by a doctor and was sent for further scans in the hospital. While Joanne accompanied her, Ray waited at the waiting area. Hours past without the mother and daughter reappearing. Ray started to feel uneasy and demanded to see them. The hospital staffs checked and confirm with Ray that there was no Peri admitted to the hospital.

Ray was convinced that the hospital is holding his wife and daughter against their will. Getting help from local police, a lengthy confrontation with the hospital's staffs and doctors, and soon involved a psychiatrist, who concluded that Ray had suffered a head injury resulting in illusions. The hospital staffs tried to explain that Ray was alone all this while and he had checked himself to the hospital.

At this point forward, multiple twists are slowly revealed. Did Ray really checked his wife and daughter in? Or was him alone? If so, where are Joanne and Peri?

Expect to see even more twists towards the end. Just when you thought it is a happy ending, viewers are presented with a tragic twist.

Review

If this movie was released 10 years ago with more big name casts and a better directing, Fractured might just be a big hit. Unfortunately, watching the film today, viewers will inadvertently make comparison with similar productions.

Much of the plot involved Ray making his point and trying to convince everyone else that his wife and daughter were kidnapped, which becomes boring and null. Unlike in Shutter Island, viewers are introduced to new characters and findings by the protagonists as he went on with his investigations.

The multiple twists in Fractured were well written but it could be excessive. Viewers might find it hard to stomach and gets annoyed, especially with the last frame of the movie bringing even more ambiguous ending. Watch it to find out what I am talking about.

Sam Worthington is at most a B-list actor, together with the rest of the casts, makes Fractured looks like a low budget production, which it probably really is. There is hardly any memorable character in the movie with all the flat acting and it seems like the whole plot is purposely dragged, slowly to the ending for its revelation and climax.
