Next to the bed of the Guayadeque ravine stands the town of Agüimes, founded in 1491 on an important aboriginal settlement after the Castilian conquest of Gran Canaria. It was created as a town under episcopal lordship by order of the Catholic Monarchs, and granted to the Church as compensation for its collaboration during the conquest
