Sisifo, the liar king
Greed can lead to your downfall, if you do not believe me then I will tell you the story of Sisifo, a king who for his ambition ended up paying dearly in the underworld, a story of Greek mythology that is worth to know.
Sisifo was a the founder of the kingdom of Corinth, for that reason he became his king, he was a cunning man who even tricked the gods themselves, in order to get power and money, it is said that he promoted the trade and navigation, to be able to have more power in people.
Everything was going very well for Sisifo, until one day, he witnessed a kidnapping of a nymph by Zeus, he promised to keep a secret about that fact, but when the father of the nymph Asopo, God of the rivers, asks for his daughter Sisifo finds an opportunity to have more things than he already has, he ask for an exchange, the secret of where is her daughter, for a river of fresh water for Corinth, which the God of the rivers accepted.
Zeus learned of such betrayal by Sisifo and sent Tartaros, God of death, to end the life of the traitor and although his appearance was chilling, Sisifo offered him food in his cell where he was, where he surprises him by making him his prisoner, the King of Corinth reuses his cunning and deception to get rid of his destiny.
Things stayed that way for a while, until Hades was enraged because he had Tartaros prisoner, he demands Zeus to resolve the situation , Zeus send Ares, God of war, to free Tartaros and send Sisifo to the underworld, Sisifo tells his wife not to offer his death and so she did.
In the underworld, Sisifo complains that his wife does not give him offerings after his death, demanding Hades to let him go to punish his wife for not doing so, of many times said to the God of the underworld, he accepted and let go to Sisifo to punish his wife, which was a scam to be able to live among the living for longer, many years passed until < strong>Sisifo went to the underworld again naturally.
Zeus and Hades annoyed at being a mockery for Sisifo, they punish him by making him carry a heavy rock uphill on a mountain and he must place it on the top of it, but at the last moment, the rock falls, causing the process to repeat itself over and over again for ever and ever.
The reason why the Gods chose this punishment can be interpreted in many ways, Albert Camus said: "The gods had condemned Sisifo to transport a rock unceasingly to the top of a mountain, from where the stone fell back by its own weight. They thought, with some foundation, that there is no more terrible punishment than useless and hopeless work." But I would like to know what do you think? How do you interpret the punishment?
Mountains represent obstacles in life which you want to conquer, whereas the large rock that is slippery and can roll anywhere can be interpreted as the lie. The rock can also be attributed to being the burden.
So no matter the obstacle you want to cross, if you are carrying the burden of lies, despite the numerous attempts, you are bound to fail as the rock will betray you at the most crucial moment.
