Her Thirties Part 88

I was standing over Marilyn. She looked up at me with tear-filled eyes, “He killed her Scott—he killed her!”

Maria’s terror-filled eyes met mine.

“What are you seeing, Love?”

“Charlie—my uncle—he killed her.”

She was staring vacantly into space, seemingly reliving the horror.

“I was sleeping upstairs in the back bedroom. The window was open and I could hear my uncle and Mother arguing in the yard. I got up and came downstairs, but they must have sought privacy by going inside, into the garage.”

She shook her head as if to clear her thoughts.

“Go on,” I encouraged.

“I went and peeked in the window. Charlie was demanding a share of an inheritance my grandfather left my mother. She refused, saying he inherited his half of the business and the money was blood money anyway—the fruit of a poisoned tree, she said.”

She squeezed her eyes tight as if visualizing the scene made her wince.

“Charlie said he couldn’t sell the business with those outstanding shares in my mother’s name. Mother just laughed at him. ‘You frittered away your inheritance and ran the business into the ground. You’re not getting a cent of what Dad left me—I’m keeping it for Catherine—she’ll get it when she turns thirty’.”

She was trembling now and I took off my coat and draped it over her shoulders.

“Mother was furious at my uncle. She pointed an accusing finger at him and began shouting:

You’re just like Dad—he knew his partners killed Marilyn because she saw too much. He could have gone to the police, but kept silent. He took a payoff—chose money over her. He was greedy just like you.

She sat down on a chair holding her head in her hands. You’re spineless—just like him.

“Charlie was enraged. He picked up a tire iron and swung, and Mother fell forward. He bent over her to check on her, but saw she was dead. Then, he began pouring gasoline everywhere. I was so numb I couldn’t move.”

She began trembling violently again.

“He locked the main door from the inside and then used the small side exit door that automatically locks. He tossed his lighter back into the garage and fled down the laneway.”

Maria was stroking Marilyn’s hair, rocking her like a baby.

“I saw it Scott—the whole thing. The flames exploded in a red ball. I remember running blindly away—out and down the street. I couldn’t bear to watch.”

“He killed her. Uncle Charlie killed my mom—he killed her, Scott.”

I bent down and put my arms around her. “It’s okay now—we know. He won’t get away with it, Love.”

Maria stood up and wiped away her own tears.

“Come inside my house, Catherine—it’s not good for you to stay here.”

“Maria’s right, Love—come.” I helped her to her feet and let her lean on me as I helped her back across the street to Maria’s house.

At least now we knew who Marilyn’s stalker was and why he wanted to kill her. Now we just had to find him before he found her

Poor Marilyn, to have been held captive by this for so long. Now Abe just has to find the uncle before he gets to Marilyn. That is if he is alive...or could there be others?

Scott saw an older, burly man shadowing Marilyn - I think he's a lone stalker juat wanting to remove Marilyn to claim the inheritance - he probably is unaware that Marilyn witnessed the murder

John Today this story has surprised me, it looks the most real and sums up the evils of what human beings are capable of. Congratulations

Thanks, Felix

Interesting ... her mother knew who killed Marilyn. Could it be that when there was a tear in Catherine's psyche that Marilyn jumped in there so her murder could be solved. But that doesn't explained Scott's memories.
