Conquistado inicialmente aos Árabes em 1166 por D. Afonso Henriques, sendo perdido para os Árabes poucos anos depois. Foi reconquistado definitivamente por D. Sancho II em 1226. Sofreu modificações por D. Diniz, D. João e D. Manuel, tendo actualmente a forma de quadrilátero. A torre de menagem foi reconstruída em 1488.
Deste ponto, dentro do castelo, podemos avistar o outro lado da fronteira, mais precisamente Badajoz, Espanha.
