Trouble for Verisign's .CC? Gotta be temporary

in #domains7 years ago (edited)

This Thursday user Pat reported in our Chinese domains Whatsapp group about a directive from China based registrars that they are stopping new registration of .CC and a bunch of other extensions as these extensions have not yet secured license in China. Verisign’s another popular extension .TV is also in the list.

Only new registrations are stopped. The directive does not affect existing registrations or their development.

You can see the latest list of MIIT approved extensions here: http://www.miit.gov.cn/n1146285/n1146352/n3054355/n3057709/n3057722/c4377447/content.html There are 26 approved extensions. Verisign’s .COM and .NET were approved in August of 2016.

.CC is a prominent extension in China after COM, CN, and NET. There are a lot of domain investors who are holding .CC domains including myself. There are many developed sites in .CC such as Chaomi.CC.

I did not notice any significant price drop in .CC domains after the news breakout. I do not think Verisign would let this slip. While it makes me wonder why they couldn’t secure the license yet just like they did for COM and NET last year.

I and another friend tried to contact Verisign to get an update. We were waiting for an update, but looks like they are slow to respond. Let us know if you can find anything from Verisign.
