Two travellers sharing a fire. // A Post Story

At the edge of the clearing he saw the coyote, as far as he could tell it was alone. It had been following him for miles. Never far, but not close enough to get a really good look. Was it injured? No, it wouldn’t have made it this far. It must have lost its pack somehow.

For him, getting lost wasn’t a problem, as long as he kept the mountain in sight. He guessed he had another week of hard hiking before he reached his village. The snow was deep, and it was hard going. Even with the snow shoes, each step was slow and deliberate.

Before long, he decided to make camp for the evening. He lit a fire near a fallen tree and cut some spruce bows to fashion a crude lean-to. It wasn’t pretty, but it would serve to keep the snow off his back and the wind out. As he sat by the fire he pulled some jerky from his pack and out of the corner of his eye he spotted movement along the tree line.

“It must be that coyote.” he said to himself. And sure enough, the lone coyote emerged from under a tree. Fearlessly it moved close enough to feel the heat of the fire. The two travellers stared at each other, neither making any sudden movements. It was a beautiful animal.

From his perch he absentmindedly he took a chunk of his jerky and tossed it in front of the coyote. It stood and sniffed the air, and then ate the meat before returning to its position. He knew he should probably scare it off, but for some reason he was drawn to the animal. Still, as he curled up under his lean-to, he kept his hatchet close. Just in case.

Morning came, and opening his eyes he saw no sign of the coyote.

"Just two travellers sharing a fire,” he thought.

That coyote picture is sweeeet!

Thanks! Yeah he just stood by the truck. So....picture time!

I liked your post.

Reminds me a little of Jack London's Call of the Wild. Probably how man and dog became companions in the earliest times.

Probably yeah. Treat training. :)

Food and warmth, and companionship. What more could a dog ask for? And the man gets warmth and companionship and a hunting aid in return. Works well for both parties in the exchange.

I enjoyed this read. Good job! Good thing to keep that hatchet close. lol

I can't say I'd fall asleep that easily.

It is a beautiful coyote. Full plumage.

It's my experience that a lot more coyotes tend to be solitary than wolves. There are just a lot of singles most of the year.

It's a good story. And plausible.

We see them out on the spray lakes road all the time. Usually in 2s and 3s.... they also hunt dogs up on Nose hill in the city. A huge pack. I wonder if different in different places?

Love the story to go with those amazing photos @jfolkmann I'm not sure if would have been able to fall asleep in those circumstances but I'm glad the two travellers respected each others need for survival and warmth and both were able to continue the journey the next day. (Following)

I absolutely loved this one! Sweet coyote made a friend. 💖 Two travellers sharing a fire... Yes. A wonderfully woven story.

Great post as usual ;)
