Achievement 2 @jesutosin task: Basic Security on STEEM
INTRODUCTION:
Its a thing of joy for me to publish my second achievement task which is Basic Security on STEEM.
As we all should know, security is very much necessary in everything we do and wherever, likewise here on Steemit.
However, there are some keys which gives the user total control of his/her funds and these keys are meant to be protected.
Below are different steem keys and how they're being used.
Master Password:
The master password is been used to generate a pdf containing all the keys .
The master password is known as the seed password.
Posting Key:
Just like the name depicts, without this key one can not be able to post on Steemit because it's used for logging in on the site.
Aside logging in, it can be used in performing other tasks like upvoting and downvoting as well, posting/editing of comments, following other Steemit users, muting others and also resteeming (sharing) a post to your blog.
Active Key:
The active key on steem is used for actions which involve funds and wallet.
You can use your active key to convert SBD to steem, vote for witness, power up and down of steem and other sensitive actions on the steem Blockchain.
Owner Key:
Owner Key as the name goes is your personal Steemit key, used mainly for recovering of tempered-with key meaning, if you notice your keys has been compromised, you can use your Owner Key to recover it . It's indeed very sensitive compared to other keys as it can be used to change all the keys.
It's better to keep an offline copy of this very key.
Memo key:
Memo keys is used during funds transfer for encrypting and decrypting of memos
How can I keep my steem account secure?
I can keep my account secure by storing an offline copy of my keys Incase pdf got deleted by mistake. Also, I will ensure I use the appropriate key on a required task.
More so, I will avoid clicking fishy links to avoid my keys been compromised.
Why should I be careful with my Master key:
Like I stated above about the use of master key which is it can be used to change other keys, it's of much need to be careful with it to avoid it being compromised by fraudsters . It's also good to understand that, if your master password is lost it can never be retrieved, Steemit does not retrieve password.
What do I do if I lost my password/keys?
There's nothing I can do, I understand this and as such, I have to be very careful with my keys.
Storing an offline copy is the best decision I'll ever make in securing my account.
Difference between master password and owner key:
The master password can be used only when you're about to recover your compromised account and it's used to create all the other keys including the owner key.
Question 1
Have you retrieve all your keys on steemit?
Yes I have retrieved all my Steemit keys with alacrity.
Question2
Do you know each of these key functions and restrictions?
Oh yes I know. As stated above with their respective functions
Question 3
How do you plan to keep your master password?
I have already stored the offline copy in a very safe and secure place.
