I was at that point in my life where I had given up trying, I seemed to fail in all I did,my favourite quote was "what will be will be", life made no sense to me,"what exactly am I on earth for?" I screamed to grandpa when he tried to cheer me up. He asked me to come into his bedroom and ensured I sat down,he brought out a dusty box from his cupboard and dusted it, I sat watching "what is this old man up to again?" I thought to myself. He dusted it,it was a box of chess "oh chess!!!" I do enjoy playing chess but it's been a while and I don't remember ever winning grandpa "why does he want me to play chess with him,like my bunch of failures is not enough for me" I soliloquized.

He brought out the chess board from the carton,it was the familiar one, the board is made of wood, it has brown blocks, a combination of light and thick brown.he set the white players before himself and the brown ones before me. I started calculating my first move then stretched out my hand to move a pawn. He hit me hard "I didn't call you here to play chess,we are going to have a talk,then maybe after that we can". It was the longest and most inspiring talk of my life.

"What do you see before you? "
"chess hungry to be played " I answered almost before he said the you. He made his long annoying laughter and looked me in the eyes, "before you lies the best life lesson you can ever get" it seemed funny to me,it actually made no sense but as the good African child that I am,I sat down and listened.

He pointed at the game board "life is a game board", he moved a pawn " you must make a move to be victorious,the moves you make determines the outcome of the game. Without strategy,plan and patience, your game will turn out to be anaemic, same with your life. You have to learn the moves of the game and the outcome of each move,what matters most is a good move". He picked up the king from the board " in our culture, a King is more respected than the Queen,but the difference is the case in a game of chess, why is that?" I thought for a while "the Queen is capable of several moves,loosing her is as good as loosing the game and the king,pawns, knights and the castle of the opponent are at her mercy". He gave me a thumb up with a satisfying smile, the talk was becoming interesting and I was beginning to think outside the box. " you said it all dear,the Queen has more value, that is why she is placed above the king, in life no one is concerned about all the chieftency attached to your name or the number of certificate you have, your value is what will determine your position in the society but then remember that when the game is over, the Queen, King,pawn and others are all placed in the same box, where they lay on eachother and no one is considered the greatest, same thing occurs in life after death. "

"So tell me my little girl, why are you so hard on yourself?" he asked. " I have failed several times in life granny, no matter how forward I try to be in setting things right." he laughed at me again and shook his head, he moved a knight forward, moved a pawn forward, then moved the night back. "You can't win by making only forward moves,there are times you have to withdraw back,don't be too forward in life. About failure, you have to loose several times before becoming a good chess player and if you quit,you will never taste the victory of winning. I have never seen a good chess player that never failed,same with a successful man. If you are not man enough to loose,you can't be man enough to win. There is something called loosing with dignity. "

"You see these peeps at the front?" He pointed at the pawns. They maybe less valued but they serve well, they sacrifice their life for the ones with greater value,this amounts to success in the game of chess.learn how to set your priorities right, always have a scale of preference, some aspect of your life should be starved and some over fed." I couldn't help but clap for granny,this is too much source. He picked up a bishop and a night, " you see.....as intelligent as the creator of this game is,he didn't forget the godly factor,you too shouldn't. "

Granny set the players back in order,went to his fridge and brought a wine, he was usually stingy with his drink,I wonder why he shared it with me. We gulped the drink and played the game of chess,I lost with dignity.
