Beach Wednesday - more from my travels
Beach Wednesday
Oh, how I love the beach! And so do my kids!
Beach Wednesday has so far been about my travels to California and Oregon. I can't help it. I grew up in Oregon and I lived in California for a very long time. My kids were all born there. We have a family cabin there. You may think I'm insane for living in Minnesota, but this is where my life is now. (And by the way, we do have 10,000 lakes, so I'll eventually post my Minnesota beach pictures. There's nothing about the word "beach" that says it has to be an ocean beach!)
This set of pictures is from a trip to southern California with the kids four years ago. We had never been to Disneyland, so we flew into LA and spent three days having fun and doing theme parks before we drove north.
But the very first thing we did was to hit the beach. This is my older daughter. Can you tell she's a Pisces?
We used to live in North-Central California, and our cabin is in the far Northern coast of California. You pretty much need a wet suit to be comfortable in the water up there. So, when we got to the warm Los Angeles beach, the kids went nuts!
My goal is always to get at least one good shot of them all jumping in the air together. One... two... three... JUMP!
Naturally, they had to get in deep!
Oh yes! We also saw mermaid while we were there. Don't ask. What can I say, that's Southern California for you.
Several days and 700 miles later, we got to our cabin and spent about five days there. The air temperature on the beach near our cabin probably averages about 60 degrees in the summer. And there is some bodacious fog!
Remind me to tell you about the time we threw my parents' ashes from a giant cliff above the sea. Or maybe not. Anyway, that happened at this beach. Interesting times. (I'm just testing to see if anyone actually reads this!)
Thanks for reading! I'd like to thank @negativer for his inspiration. He posts amazing pictures of Florida beaches on Wednesdays and totally inspires me. Check out the enormous cumulus clouds in this post.
Okay, back to writing fiction. Plus I'm over-due for an installment in my "Words to Learn" series and my Writing Workshop series. I've been too busy writing to write about writing!
I missed this yesterday! I love reading all your family backstory (not sure if I want to ask about the ashes though). I definitely want to see what passes for a beach in Minnesota. Once you can see them. When the ice melts. Sometime in July.
(That last pic above of the fog/clouds rolling in (or out?) looks pretty epic.
I can drum up some of my Minnesota beach pictures up from past years. Yeah, they are covered in snow now!
About the ashes, there is more about that in the comments with @ducksaplenty. It was quite a day.
Lovely pictures! Bodacious is the right word for that fog. I did read the part about the ashes release and remember that day vividly. Brilliant blue sky. Sparkling sun off the Pacific. Wind whipping across the grasses on the cliff. Wild flowers everywhere. It was so beautiful it was difficult to be sad.
Oh, that’s so true. It was a beautiful day. Very breezy, with the wind blowing every which way and whipping our hair and clothes. We said some things—words and poems and memories. Uncle Al was there, and he was the saddest of all of us. Our parents were his very good friends and an era was gone. I remember I tried to video tape it so we had something from that day, when the ashes were gone. But the video camera was low on battery so it failed immediately. But then it was all so freeing. I let go of the recording and we released the ashes into that whipping wind. Of course they went everywhere. But then we all hugged and took one last look at the ocean. And as always, time marched on and that moment became history.
A gold lamé mermaid at that ... looked like a fabulous day at the beach, Jayna:)
Yeah, there's something you don't see every day! I suppose she got some desired attention!
LOL ... what makes you think she wanted attention. I often wear gold lamé to clean the house.
Oh you are too funny!
Aww! They almost nailed that jump!
You get to writing gurrll, we just have a few more days :P
Oh I know. I am devoting my day to writing. Starting now. 😊
Just finished mine! Looks like it helps to not have a beach you can run off to :PPPPP (lowkey salty. Sea salty.)
Just a dash of salt! 😆
Beaches are peachy...
Thanks for the lovely photos. The mermaid was a bonus!
And yes, I'd like to hear the story, though it must be a sad one... that last beach is Oregon, right?
😄😇😄
Thanks, @creatr! No actually the last one is the Lost Coast of California. I wrote about it in a previous Beach Wednesday a few weeks ago. Beautiful place. There’s a bit more about the ashes in the comments of this post by my sister, @ducksaplenty. Thanks for reading!
