To the lighthouse - Actifit: September 24 2019
Today was mostly a driving day, coming back from our trip to Grand Marais. But we also stopped for a few pictures on the way back, and made a stop at Split Rock Lighthouse, where there is a visitor’s center and museum and you can tour the old lighthouse which was completed in 1910.
The first stop on the way back was these giant Adirondack chairs.
Next was Split Rock Lighthouse, aa I mentioned. It is a fascinating historic location. I learned a ton about the number of shipwrecks on Lake Superior over the many years. It’s pretty astounding. And the lake is so deep that I don’t think they have all been found.
Certain areas have been exceptionally treacherous, like the Split Rock area. Something like 19 shipwrecks happened in that area in one storm in 1905, which is what prompted the construction of the lighthouse. Not one boat has wrecked there since.
One of the problems in that area is that there is so much iron in the water there that it would render compasses useless.
Anyway, it’s a gorgeous part of the coast and the lighthouse is a wonderful destination. We walked all over the grounds, the old lighthouse keeper’s house and up into the lighthouse itself.
They keep the old house as it was and there are people in period costumes.
Thank you for visiting!

It's on the lake? Those are a lot of shipwrecks for a lake. Almost unbelievable.
The interior rocks, especially that old stove. I've known those from my great grandparents' place.
Yes, it reminds me of my grandmother's house too. The Great Lakes have claimed about 30,000 lives from shipwrecks, which number about 6,000. The weather is absolutely fierce at certain times of the year.
So many things to realize only when you delve into it. If I hadn't asked my stupid question, I would have no idea ;)
Ha ha. It really is mind blowing. I may need to do more research and writing on this. I find it fascinating!
19 in one storm...wow 👀
Awesomeness activity & pics 🙏
Wishing you a fantastic day ahead 💞

Way cool. I've visited a lot of lighthouses over the years, but always on the coasts, never on the lakes.
I've had a serious thing for lighthouses since I was a kid, including having always wanted to live in one, complete with garden and library.
I remember a friend once balking at the idea, but I've always been a bit if a loner, so I never thought it would be a hardship, as long as I could come ashore (or into town, depending), from time to time.
Looks like I'll have to start visiting some of the Great Lakes lighthouses now.
Lovely post, thanks!

Great photos and reporting too, I enjoyed it.
I was making a comment on @silvertop's post about how some of your photos look like disney stuff and you didn't disappoint.
I remember "Honey I shrunk the kids" and I think the chairs in your photo fits into the kind of chair they'll use for such movies. Lol.
Great travelogue and photo essay

Want to have your post on the map too?
@jayna awesome travel blog for your actifit report. I love seeing old things like the lighthouse preserved as they were in their own time period. Wow, that's a lot of shipwrecks! I never would have thought about too much iron in the water would make the compasses go wonky.
Either those are really big chairs or you guys have shrunk a lot since I last visited 😁
At first I thought you were talking about Split Rock Lighthouse in Australia but then you said "lake" and I was thinking that it must be one giant lake for there to be light houses on! Interesting to read about the iron content in the water though.
Thanks for sharing your walk!
