The architecture scene was not too shabby during my morning run

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

I had my long run this morning and had no idea what an architectural treat I was in for.

I plan my routes ahead of time using mapmyrun.com, and while I know the distance and elevation of the route I plan, I don't always know the buildings I'll pass along the way.

Today I lucked out, and saw several interesting or uncharacteristic structures on my run. The weather was beautiful, with temperatures in the high 60s and sunny blue skies. Lots of other people were out for walks, cycling, and running, so I had plenty of people to wave hello to during my long run.

This Japanese Pagoda is the only home of its kind in the entire area. After a bit of research, I've learned that it is over 100 years old and has served as a sorority house for a seminary school, office space, and a military rehabilitation center. As of 2011, the pagoda is a single-family private residence.

The Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormon Temple) is visible from several locations around the Washington DC area, but I was not expecting to see its spires peeking over the trees during my run this morning. The temple is 288 feet tall, the highest of any Mormon Temple.

I love the sense of camaraderie out on the trails.

I even cheered on a cyclist while I was cruising down the hill that he was grunting his way up. Soon after, I faced a hill of my own with no cheerleaders to be found! No Fair!!

This pedestrian overpass crossed over Rock Creek Trail, and was beautifully greened with age.

Finally, this Spanish Mission style home was also an unexpected work of art this morning. The vast majority of homes in the area look like brick boxes, so interesting architecture does not get past me unappreciated!

I hardly ever like to run the same route twice, but I may just need to run this one again.

Very nice shots my dear, i want to visit it.

Thanks @creativewoman! If you're ever in the US, Washington DC area has a lot of beautiful sights (and some not so beautiful...)

What a great run you must have had. So many interesting places along the way. I appreciate the history you gave on the Japanese pagoda. Your friend 🐓🐓

Thanks @mother2chicks :) I had no idea about that place until I Googled it and found out it's interesting history. I wonder how many other things are like that all around us, where if we only knew the back story we'd be much more impressed!

Nice captures @jaymorebeet, and quite a variety of styles for a morning run!!!

I really hit the jackpot huh? I wasn't expecting to see anything but trails and brick houses, but I was pleasantly surprised!

What fun to see all of this in one run. Would be fun (again) to do a summer, fall, winter and spring photo of each. Thanks for sharing your day out in the sun. (Can't even see the sun here, at noon, too much smoke. Yucko)

I always think about that kind of stuff! I have a big giant (maybe 60-70 year old) maple tree in the front yard, and I want to take a photo of it from the same exact spot in all seasons - or maybe even once per month. Oh man and make a calendar out of it! (I need to quit my day job so I can do my hobbies...)

That would be very cool. I would buy one, as long as it was below $48.50 retail. That whole day job thing sure gets in the way, doesn't it?!!

Yeah it's killing me! (While also making sure we have a place to live and that my brain doesn't turn to mush.) I guess it could be worse...

Also, sorry to hear about the smoky times you are having out West. I'm heading out to California later this month...I wonder if I'll get there while there are still fires... Is there anything you can do to protect yourself or your home?

It has been very nasty in the air department. Worst in 25 years here for air quality. When you say protect, do you mean your physical presence, and house, or just the breathing part? The breathing part is easier, with an organic vapor mask with filter. The other part, that is more of a being in the right place at the right time, all to plan. Those things are MASSIVE, and larger than us. So best to just stay out of it's path, which is pretty easy to do. They keep pretty good tabs on what is up most places, and for it to reach my house, in the big city, would be near impossible, without major major catastrophe.
I used to fight fires, and it was rather exciting, and pretty grueling at times, to say the least. "Quick, dig a hole in the dirt and bury your face so you can breathe when the smoke shifts". Quite the experience most times.

Woahhh! Yeah i meant protect your lungs --- I mean we get big rain storms and snow and stuff but fire is a whole other level of danger i think. Good thing for the filtration masks.

I liked the trusses of the bridge!

Me too! I love the contrast of the angular beams and the mossy nature just not giving up!
