Happy Halloween - Steemit Education (Korean Academy Edition)

in #halloween7 years ago

Halloween is one of those holidays where you get to revisit your youthfulness and eat as much candy as you can. What is there not to love? However, Halloween is still largely a Western tradition and has not become a big hit in Asian culture. That's just one more reason for me to introduce Halloween to my young, English learners in hopes that they carry on the Halloween spirit for years to come.

In South Korea, Halloween is not a well known holiday and those who are aware usually pay minimal attention to it. As an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher, I think it is important to introduce young learners to traditions and holidays from other cultures.

This year in our English Academy, we decided to carve pumpkins, watch Halloween movies and a few other Halloween activities. At first the children were very timid of putting their hands in a pumpkin and scooping out the inside, but after they had warmed to the idea, smiles and laughs could be seen all around. Carving the pumpkins was an arduous task as the pumpkins in South Korea are not what I am used to. These pumpkins were short and thick rather than the big and fat pumpkins that I have grown accustomed to in Canada. It made it very tricky to carve with any sort of precision.

Although it was tricky, the carving turned out great. The kids were very pleased with the results and full of energy from the copious amount of candy they had consumed. All in all I think it was a successful event at our English institute and hopefully the kids will remember that learning English isn't always about studying from a book.

Thanks so much for sharing the Korean Halloween. I thought it's confined only to Europe and America. Knew about it the first time in 2011 when I lived in the west. :)

Halloween is a great, fun time. Hope you enjoyed it

Sadly, no.
I'm in India now and, they don't celebrate here. :(

Yeah, Halloween is not a big holiday, just a fun one with costumes and some candy. Happy Halloween!

I think you know korean halloween more than I! Haha Kids look interested in this activity:-)

Haha I wish Halloween was more popular in Korea. Maybe in the future

Wow! Very nice man! I liked this

Glad you were able to share something with your kids. :) Next time have them wear costumes. lol

I tried, sometimes I have to convince the parents more than the students
