Winter Sentry By Z.S. Liang

in #history5 years ago (edited)

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

During my research for the series on Hermann's story of being captured by the Indians and living with them for 9 years I kept coming across paintings by Z.S. Liang and he soon became one of my favorite Western and American Indian artists.

I want to do a series about his story because he is Chinese and came to the United States to study art in 1982 and became obsessed with Native Americans. He devoted himself full time to study, research, and painting Indians from various tribes.

His research is relentless

He's spent years traveling and meeting with tribal leaders in consultation for his work, including Sitting Bull's great, great, great Grandson. His dedication to historical accuracy is total and it shows in his paintings.

He even took riding lessons so he could better understand horses and their muscular form in order to paint them as accurate as possible. The only book I've found about his life costs $60 so I haven't bought it just yet. lol.

One of my favorites

Today I just wanted to share one of my favorite paintings called Camp Sentry which is a seemingly simple scene of a lone sentry in the winter.

Something about this one strikes me as magnificent. (Although I think it should be called Winter Sentry so I'm kinda renaming it for my post, lol)

I love the contrast in colors of the warrior's coat against the mountains, the subtle colors of the sky, the way he painted the snow and grass. I think it's just perfect.

Historically accurate

It was very important for the tribes to maintain security so they used sentries to stand guard, hopefully at all times although I was amazed in Hermann's story with how many times their villages had surprise attacks because they didn't have scouts or sentries posted.

With the image that Z.S. Liang gives us I can almost feel like I'm with the sentry. The painting is of a Piegan war chief.

Side note:

The Piegan were the largest band of the Blackfoot confederation, based in Montana. They were also one of hundreds of tribes starved by the decimation of the buffalo herds by the U.S. government.

Their numbers were greatly reduced by starvation and one of many massacres took place in 1870 when a U.S. Army unit attacked a Piegan village, killing 173 innocent natives.

This is not the village which was attacked but is indeed a Piegan village around 1900:

Almost all were women, children and old men showing no threat or resistance. This is known as the Marias Massacre.

After they were forced onto the reservations about a quarter of them starved to death at Fort Shaw and Fort Belknap, under the "care" of the federal government.

Another photo by Curtis S. Edwards in 1910, these are Piegan women:

By that time their numbers were down to about 2,000. Most live in Northwestern Montana today in the Blackfeet Nation whose population is about 100,000.

Marvelous painting, but another sad story Janton! I didn't even heard of this tribe before, but it breaks my heart how many people lost their lives and freedom :(

Howdy Miss Lena! Just trying to keep it real and not sugarcoat it. I know. Well, I think people need to know the truth and then if they get a chance to buy from one of the tribes they will do that to help them out a little. They really deserve massive reparations but I don't think that's going to happen. But yes, it was genocide pure and simple. And probably 95% of the people don't know it. 100% of the Indians know it.

Howdy Janton! I absolutely understand and I am not being critical. I think you are doing a great job spreading the awareness. Even if it is just us here on Steemit.

Thanks so much Miss Lena. What are your weekend plans?

You are most welcome Janton!

Laundry day again, today lol. I am drying my bed sheets outside; it's so nice to be able to do that. Later I am doing new recipe photoshoot 😉

How about you Janton ?

Howdy Miss Lena, our internet has been down for 4 or 5 hours, that's why I'm so late replying to you. That all sounds good and I'm so glad the weather is finally nice up there! I've been mowing all afternoon and doing some landscaping work. But now that the internet is back on I'll spend some time on steemit after dinner.

Oh really? I wonder why!!! Well at least you did some work outside and Mrs. J. will be happy. Steemit is not going anywhere 😊

I also spent almost all day outside, took lots of photos so now I am exhausted and eaten by mosquitoes, lol. But I still have to wash the dishes and my hair. I'll catch up with you tomorrow, so have a wonderful evening 😊

thanks Miss Lena. I'll try to have a decent evening. We never know why our internet goes out on us. Usually it happens in stormy weather but it wasn't today. But it's always been very hit and miss, on and off.

Where we live is far enough out of town that it's hard to get any kind of internet out here. They all say you can live anywhere but there still has to be a signal tower fairly close.

As far as Mrs. J. being happy. I don't think so. Mowing ain't her interest. I think the only thing that would make her happy is me finding a real world job that pays well!

Howdy steem-plus! Thanks so much for the upvote!

Interesting stuff. I may have to check some more of his art out. Before I got to the date, I was thinking "Chinese guy in the old west" and, of course, Kung Fu came to mind. lol

Apparently, I have a native ancestor from a Montana tribe, but know little more than that.

lol! yes, Kung Fu! I forgot about that show with David Carradine, good thinking sir fotosdenada.
Oh that sounds very interesting about the relative who was native American. Is there a way to find out more?

Those photos are wonderful @janton I see why you like "Camp Sentry" by Z.S. Liang, fantastic emotion and movement in it.

Howdy rebeccabe! oh I think you have great taste in art! lol. yes, it's very powerful and I'm so glad you appreciate it. What I like is that Liang is my age, well, one year older, so he'll have dozens more great paintings before he's through. I don't think painters ever retire.

Oppphs @janton .. You called me a strange name...lol

lol! I sure did, I'm sorry. You guys are similar in age and hair color and style too I think. Anyway, my apologies.

Howdy jonboy canton, I wonder if the book on Liang's life is available on kindle? It is a much cheaper way of buying books. What a most interesting man and I totally see why he grabbed your attention.

Howdy angiemitchell and thanks for the idea about Kindle. I might have to check that out. I don't have a Kindle but I've read books online through a Kindle app that was free.

Another fab painting by Liang of the Camp Sentry.
When I see all those wigwams groped together in a village, I wonder where everyone went to the toilet. Maybe they had an outhouse.

lol! you know what? I was hoping that Hermann would explain that, it's something that I keep wondering about and all I have to do is google it I'm sure but I never have! lol. Maybe I don't really want to know. Like which cactus did they use for toilet paper? lol.

Zhou Su Liang is very dedicated to his craft. I admire his dedication and his talent.

Howdy sir Vincent! yes, it's rare for a Chinese person isn't it? lol...no no no, not even I can insult the entire Chinese race! lol. But yes and we all benefit from his dedication.

Howdy esteemapp! thank you so much for the upvote and great platform!

Howdy Sir @janton. Another great post with a beautiful painting my friend!
Don't forget to post the reason for the nation that deserted their cities.
Blessings!

Howdy sir papilloncharity! yes sir, that one about the Anasazi abandoning their cities is on my list. I just have to finish a few posts about some more Indian pottery. I'm a big fan of that stuff. But our internet has been down for 4 or 5 hours today so I'm not going to post today. How are you and the Missus doing?

Howdy Sir @janton, sad about your internet and we are doing fine my friend!
Hope you are up again soon.
Blessings!

He is an amazing artist and I am so glad you brought him to our attention. His attention to detail is amazing.

Howdy Melinda! I agree about him, and he's my age, or close to it, so he can do dozens more great paintings. Well, I have no idea how long it takes to do one though. But artists never retire do they?

I hope he paints many more!

Howdy today Melinda! I do to and now I have his website where he shows his latest paintings which is interesting to keep up with his work.
