Captured By The Apache: Hermann Tells Of Victorio's Exploits

in #history5 years ago

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas! We're in a series about the Wild West and the story of an 11 year old German boy, Hermann, who was captured by an Apache war party from his family's farm in 1870 in Central Texas.

By this time in the story Hermann has been with the Apache for probably 6 months and has become, through great pain and training, a bonafide tribe member and warrior.

In the last post the Apache and Comanche chiefs agreed to make peace between them and focus on defeating the Palefaces together.

This decision was largely because of the influence which Victorio brought to the council. Victorio was a famous warrior and chief who was known as a brilliant strategist and gifted fighter and leader. Hermann recounted some stories about Victorio.

The first story may be a myth, I'm not sure, but the second story is an incident that Hermann witnessed himself so I have more confidence in that one.

Victorio is trapped by a dead buffalo

In the first story Victorio was out hunting and killed a buffalo. He dressed it and as night came so did bitter cold temperatures, so he used the buffalo hide to wrap himself up in.

The next morning everything was still frozen and the thick rawhide had frozen stiff like a cocoon with Victorio inside. The wet hide had frozen solid and he was trapped. For two days and nights he was trapped in the frozen hide but on the third day the sun shone and it warmed up enough that he was able to free himself.

I have no idea if that's possible but given how thick, heavy, and wet the raw buffalo hide was, I can see it as being possible.

Victorio's daring ride behind enemy lines

The next story takes place in Mexico. The Apache spent alot of time fighting Mexicans and this battle was with the Mexican army. One of Victorio's brothers was captured. Hermann was watching the battle from a hilltop.

Victorio rode through a canyon and into the midst of the soldiers where his brother was. His brother jumped up on the horse behind Victorio and they rode off. There was alot of smoke and confusion. Smoke from fires burning and confusion by what Victorio just did.

They rode back toward their men amid cross-fire and right when they were approaching the Indian line a rifle bullet entered Victorio's brother's back, went through him into Victorio's back and out Victorio's chest. His brother was killed instantly and fell off the horse.

Herbal medicine helped heal him

Victorio stopped, picked up his brother's body and put it on the horse and rode the rest of the way in. The Indians treated him by probing the wound and finding that it went clean through they cut off the bruised flesh and treated the wound with a solution made from some kind of weed and water mixture.

Hermann didn't know what kind of plant it was, unfortunately. Victorio eventually recovered, the bullet had passed through his right lung.

The Mexicans wanted him bad

The Mexican government had a bounty on his head of $1,500. That translates to $30,000 in today's money but it was a much larger sum than it sounds like because back then a good yearly wage was $1,200. So it was a fortune.

Here's a photo of him from when he was on the reservation for a short time before he escaped because the conditions were so terrible and his people were starving. I wonder if the Mexican government kept the bounty on him?

A couple more stories

Hermann said that another time in Mexico he was staying under a bluff in the mountains and a brave had been captured and forced to tell Victorio's location. He killed everyone who tried to approach and then escaped during the night.

In the Black Hills of South Dakota one time a group of hunters was after him. He decoyed them and got them separated, then killed them all one by one during the night.

Hermann said he had four wives and some beautiful daughters. Hermann had stolen a fancy saddle and Victorio offered him a pretty girl for it but he turned him down.

I don't know if it was one of Victorio's daughters or not, I would hope not! But maybe he felt he had a surplus of women and thought a good saddle would be more practical.

In the next post Hermann goes on more raids and comes within a hair's breath of death.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

You know.... I think my father would be right into this.... so many western books on his wall

Great read and what a freaking epic story line ❤️

Howdy today sir d00k13! Well your father had good taste in stories! lol. Yes, it's an amazing story. Quite a few whites were captured but very few wrote about their experiences. Well, Hermann didn't even write about it but a friend of his got him to tell it and the friend wrote it all down. Glimpses into the Indian culture that few whites have seen and no one knows about!
Thanks for reading and for your kind words!

No worries my friend, keep on writing, I’ll let you know what my father has to say when he’s done 😅 I have yet to get him on Steem.... maybe he will be inclined to tell you himself 😆

haha! yes it took quite awhile before I was convinced to get on also! But once he got here I think he'd get sucked in!

Victorio had an amazing life, didn't he? I can imagine him getting himself stuck inside an unfleshed Buffalo robe! Those things are horribly heavy when they have been tanned, I could see him getting stuck inside a frozen one!

Ever try to carry one? Tanned they are still huge and super heavy. Yep! And then frozen? Talk about stuck!

Posted using Partiko Android

I have carried one! Back in the day I participated in black powder Rendezvous events and at night would sleep in a canvas teepee on that Buffalo robe. It gave me a bit of a feeling as to what that lifestyle might have been like.

wow that's a cool experience Melinda! I'm jealous. So you can see how that hide could keep you warm.

My favorite part was cooking over the campfire and trying to stay authentic to the period. An expensive hobby, but lots of fun!

So you guys were kind of roughing it? Were you with a group?

No we had our own camp set up, and made new friends at each rondevous,. Not all of the people that you would make friends with along the way would be going to the same events that you were going to, but it was always fun to recognize someone from a previous camp.

It was totally roughing it where people in the camp could see... Although any modern necessities, including the cooler full of ice were in the truck in the parking lot, just over the hill!

But you slept in tents with no modern conveniences, that's roughing it. My wife would hate that, too rough! lol.

Howdy Melinda! yes he was amazing, I was reading more about his life tonight and he was tearing up the military like crazy with his guerilla warfare. Strike and win a battle and disappear. Over and over.
Yes I agree with the buffalo hide frozen trap and so does a real Indian, ganjafarmer!

For a picture that doesn’t look intimidating, that Victorio ain’t no joke.

haha! howdy sir dandays, yes sir he looks pretty mild in that photo doesn't he? I don't think that lasted long. He lead 150 braves out of the reservation and they went on the warpath and did tremendous damage to the military using guerilla warfare tactics. There's a half dozen books about him so I might get a couple and do a series about him someday..maybe.

I think you should. We’ve been taught all about Napoleon, Mussolini, Caesar, enter whoever you want but there’s a reason we weren’t taught anything about Native American leaders who also were conquerors—hook us up, Janton.

Hey that's a good point sir dandays! Why don't we know anything about the brilliant American Indian military leaders? Especially when he was teamed up with the great female warrior, Lozen, they were undefeated and she had a gift of always
knowing where the enemy was.
When she surrendered she died shortly after of some white man's disease on the reservation.

the reason I said American Indian is because I just read an article about a pole they did with Native Americans and they prefer the term American Indians to Native Americans.

But from what I understand, Victorio wrecked havoc with the U.S. army and won every battle. It's amazing that no one has ever heard of him(white eyes anyway) but then when I started looking into it he was a great chief like Geronimo.

I know very little about Geronimo, too. Let us have it, Janton, some American Indian #history.

howdy sir dandays! There's a good chance it'll happen.

Oh my gosh!!! Honestly; a girl for a saddle! It's actually funny that Herman turned him down, but obviously he was still too young , lol. I am also wondering where Victorio got that name; it doesn't sound like a typical Apache name. Clearly he was quite a warrior, I have to give him that.

haha! yeah I think Hermann turned Victorio down because he wasn't interested in girls yet, not because it was a bad deal! lol.
Great question about the name too, I may have to buy some books afterall.

Well let me know when you find out.

By the way, if you like healthy blueberry jam that takes only 5 minutes to make, than check my new recipe 😊

oh I love your recipes! Thanks for letting me know!
And I'll let you know if I ever find out about that name. Yeah that can't be an Indian name, he would have something that we wouldn't be able to pronounce!

Yes for sure and thank you 😊

howdy esteemapp! thanks so much for the upvote and for such an excellent platform!

I wonder if the Mexican army gave him the name and it stuck...then again I guess they wouldn't have wanted him to carry victory around in his name. Maybe a nickname made up by disgruntled soldiers.

He was a good looking guy. Such a strong face.

Howdy ginnyannette! I have no idea how he got the name that all of us English speakers call him. His Indian name is Bidu-ya but I doubt if that translates to Victorio in English. Yeah I figured it was Spanish but who knows. he was known as the most fiercest Apache warrior and I don't know much more about him. But yes, very strong face!

This is a great story, I love reading it @janton I'll be watching out for the next chapter. 👍

howdy sir wonderwop and thank you for the kind words, I agree it's a wild story! Hey is there a story behind your username? I mean that is such a great one and one that people can't forget! lol. plus that great profile photo with the sombrero is quite the branding image! lol.

@janton I picked up WonderWop in my high school days when it was my CB handle. It's followed me for over 40 years. In 2011 I was the Finance Minister for Rey Feo LXIII, the Ugly King, it's a Fiesta thing. Which happens to be starting this week here in San Antonio. It's 10 straight days of partying, parades, and raising money for scholarships!

lol! That's a great story sir wonderwop! What are all the medals? lol. its a fantastic looking get up!

This was mine. Each Minister designed their own medal and then we would exchange them with other organizations.

Howdy today sir wonderwop! That's a great idea and that's a fun design too!

Howdy powerhousecreatives! Thanks so much for the upvote, you're the best!

Yep a buffalo robe dried tanned and dry? Oh heavy. Now wet? With fat and tissue? Yep.

Oh I'm having a day!

@eaglespirit was the person that wanted me to personally attack you for that article about my family... She is being abusive today and thinks I care enough about her opinion her insults hurt.

Then... Oh radical vegans are at it again.

I'm over here dieing of laughter.

All walks of life are the same way, @ganjafarmer, just turn your head and, like a loud set of fishtails on a Harley, eventually the sound goes away.

This is just my opinion, by the way, ooh!! That reminds me—my opinion, the one you’re reading right now, means the world to me and me only, just thought I’d throw that fun fact in there—would you agree with this upcoming scenario, @janton? 😉 Ready? Here goes: You could give a family of 5 a $1 bill each week and they’ll be happy for awhile. They’ll even tell all of their friend about the nice guy who gives their whole family $1 each week. But eventually one of them will want more and, before long, you’ll be the person who doesn’t care about them because all you’ve ever given them is $1.

‘Humans.’ For the most part, humans are terrifying creatures. Anything that can’t breathe oxygen without wanting to steal someone else’s oxygen is terrifying—aka humans.

But, what do I know?... 🤔 Ok, I’ve typed enough, I’ll go vanish to another illuminated screen somewhere in this realm of data connections and explain why my opinion matters to them now.

haha! yeah who asked you for your 2bit opinion sir dandays? lol. That is so true though, humans are terrifying creatures, well said and so true about the $1 giving thing! You nailed it!

Haha 2 bit... Glad I'm your friend! Lol!

Love it! And the story of us meeting has been told again today!

howdy sir ganjafarmer! yes I saw that and had to wonder if the Shoshone were warriors because it sounds like you don't mind a fight!

Love your honesty! And thank you!
