Old-Time Gospel Music

in #music8 years ago (edited)

Old-Time Music, also called Mountain Music, is one of the distinct forms within the overarching American Folk Music tradition. It draws primarily from English, Scottish, and Irish traditional music, but has influences from many other sources as immigrants from around the world settled early America.

Old-time music often features a fiddle as the lead instrument. I imagine it's rather like what Charles "Pa" Ingalls played for his family in Laura's earliest memories of their little house in the big woods and throughout the rest of her stories. Banjos, Guitars, hammered dulcimers, mandolins, and other stringed instruments are often featured as well, and the tradition of "play what you've got" can result in many other instruments being played too.

The religious traditions of the Appalachian cultures resulted in a lot of gospel music and hymns being played in the old-time style. Many of the earliest recordings from groups like the Carter Family were religious in nature. Old-Time is the chief precursor to Bluegrass. Modern groups playing the old-time style have also maintained that tradition, and many bluegrass bands will still play hymns and spirituals in an old-time style, too. I'd like to share a couple of my favorite such songs here.

And Jesus said unto him, "No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."(Luke 9:62, KJV)

Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him... (Colossians 3:9-10, KJV)

Not many do the old school stuff like these guys.

Flatfoot 56 is one of the best underrated Celtic punk bands out there!

Agree, these guys are phenomenal.
I'm hoping to be able to see them this summer. Flatfoot and Tobin Bawinkle's side project 6'10 are both playing within a couple hundred miles of where I live mid summer. Gotta make some time and $ for a little road trip.

Bluegrass and folk music are very big where I live. There is a big festival called Irishfest 2000 that brings a lot of big names to the area every year. Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie were living and performing in the Berkshires less than 2 hours from here during their respective heydays as well.

Give me that old time religion! While not my favorite genre of music I like to listen to it sometimes. The soundtrack to the movie Brother Where You Bound had some good music of this type while maybe not religious per sae but bluegrass and hill music

Some fine musicianship found in the first vid. Alas the second piece would not play for me, Jacob. I do love bluegrass and the blues but no gospel. I may have to expand my fave library on youtube:)

You're up north in Canada, right? Could be a copyright issue. The band is Blue Highway, and the track title is Two Coats. Maybe you can find it by other means.

@jacobtothe You have received a random upvote from @transparencybot for not using bidbots on this post and using the #nobidbot tag!

music is the power of one's art, not all can play it,

But what does that have to do with my post? And why did you comment, but not upvote?
