Tips for Breaking Bad Habits at the Workplace

It is easy to make a bad habit your daily routine. For instance, sitting at your desk while you work at your computer all day without even taking time to get up and walk around can become your routine. Even if you have the desire to go out and do something or go for a walk, you are afraid that you will fall back into your bad habit of sitting in your chair. You may also be afraid that if you don't change your behavior right away you will be embarrassed by your actions. Changing this bad habit is easier than you think.


The first step in changing bad habits is to identify them. You may need to spend some time with someone who will help you break your bad habit if you are unable to do it on your own. There are many people who will not only help you change your behavior, but also help you find new ways to deal with stress and boredom. One way that breaking a bad habit like sitting in one place for prolonged periods of time can be broken is by finding new activities to fill your time. Here are four easy ways to Breaking Bad Habits in the workplace:

Identify Your Triggers. Knowing what your triggers are can make it much easier to avoid doing them. This is especially important when it comes to breaking bad habits, because you want to avoid doing them as much as possible until you have pinpointed them. For example, knowing that you get bored easily can help you avoid being in front of the television all day.

Avoid All temptations. If you want to start breaking bad habits at work, identify all the things that cause you to eat junk food, or that cause you to remain in your cubicle unproductively for long hours. Once you know what these trigger foods are, then you can avoid them. You may even be surprised to find out that your office mates are also guilty of eating junk food behind your back.

Break the pattern. If you have already identified your triggers, but continue to do your bad behavior, then you are not really dealing with the problem, you are just ignoring it. In other words, you are not effectively dealing with the problem, you are just pretending to ignore it. When it comes to breaking bad habits at work, you cannot just change your behavior, you have to break the behavior. Otherwise you will just be replacing one bad habit with another, and this only increases the amount of work that you have to do.


Seek Help. Sometimes you cannot overcome temptation, and you may have to seek help. If you think there is nothing wrong with your bad behaviors at work, then seek help from a counselor, therapist, or even a therapist. If you are having psychological problems as well, then seeking professional help can help us deal with our bad habits, as well as help us to get over them more quickly.
