Adventures in Dog Walking
One of the aspects that I love the most about my job, aside of working with dogs, is that I am outside and active all day. Even in the insane New England weather.
Regardless of how extreme the weather may be on any given day, be it brutally cold or excruciatingly hot, I would choose this over sitting in a cubed prison all day surrounded by equally unhappy humans.
Being outside all day and not working with humans, gives me a very welcomed perspective as an observer. I see so much more now than I ever did before. I appreciate everything around me that much more as well...the world has become a living painting for me, one in which I notice details that were previously overlooked.
My favorite part of observing is people watching. How they drive, how they walk, how they move through the world.
The faces they make and the things they do when they think no one is watching.
Sometimes I pull a Henri Cartier-Bresson (one of my favorite photographers) and sneak in a few pics.
Sometimes I wish I had the nerve to simply walk up and have them stand for me real quick.
Well...I finally did.
In my years of walking dogs around the same neighborhoods, I tend to run into certain people over and over again. One of those people is Van. Van walks his dogs around one of the areas I frequent, and he walks them while playing his guitar. Everytime I saw him with his 2 dogs, I always wanted to stop and ask for his photo.
Yesterday, I finaly did. We ended up chatting for a spell and it made me realize that I need to push myself and not let some self contrived fear and anxiety stop me from capturing images ... something that feels very instrinsic to me.
It also made me realize that life waits for no one. Yesterday, Van only had one dog with him. Turns out his other dog passed away back in July. He tells me he doesn't think Munchkin (I think that's her name) has very long either, but she still enjoys her walks and the strangers they meet on their adventures; so he plans on walking with her until she no longer can.
That moment made me sad and inspired me. I missed my opportunity to photograph him with him two dogs, but from now on, I will not miss any more.
Thank you for letting me take yours and Munchkin's photo!
You can check out Van on his YouTube channel.

I love that photo with Van and Munchkin together. Maybe being a photographer is a way to connect with all those people who shuffle along at the periphery of your life. You never know what kinds of cool humans you might meet, and having a camera gives you the perfect excuse to find out.
I definitely need to start carrying around my big camera with me like I used to. You would have liked Van. He gave me a viking handshake LOL
Well done. He looks like quite a character and it turns out he was actually happy to talk to you.
I have to get over some discomfort with public photography as well. It's ridiculous, isn't it, since everyone is out filming with their cell phones all the time. And yet I have to feel like a creep just because I'm waving around a box with a lens on it?
That's a really valid point @ filming with cellphones. For me I think it also has to do with not interrupting people and taking their time...but I have found that most people will let you take their photograph, and the ones that say no, well...their loss lol
