Are You a Modern Dad?

Times change and dad's role in parenting, too. In the last decade men have moved away from the role of father merely as provider or reproducer, to conquer a more fertile, nourishing and enriching bond based on greater emotional commitment and enjoyment of their sons and daughters. We see how the number of male parents is more participatory and involved in parenting. Many men begin to become emotionally involved with their children from the very moment of conception and pregnancy, accompanying and supporting closely and constantly the pregnant mother. The days when parents did not even think about feeding, sanitizing or bringing their children to the pediatrician are left behind.

According to studies conducted by the US Census Bureau, stay-at-home dads have doubled in the last decade. In many countries, the number of dads who opt for flexible-time jobs to work from home or who, after prior agreement and evaluation with their partners, decide to pause in their careers to deal with child-rearing. Studies have been conducted in Europe and some Latin American countries that measure the change in the way new fathers are bonding with their children. The trend is that men are enjoying the experience of being parents, they are very affectionate and are 100% involved in their children's education. There is even a significant percentage of dads who agree to sacrifice their salary or professional development to devote more time to their families.

Generational change is imminent. Many men perceive that they have a much closer relationship with their children than they did with their parents. They also feel a need to increase work permits to spend more time with their children after childbirth or birth, and are very interested in establishing real family work reconciliation policies that allow them to spend more time with their family.

Men and women are aware that the roles and roles of father and mother do not always and necessarily do not depend on gender. The woman has conquered public spaces (study, work, profession, politics, sport ...) which opens spaces within the home so that the man also participates in the functions, which were attributed only to the female sex, as is the case of housework and parenting.

Little by little we are moving towards a new paternity. And although the greater burden of domestic work and upbringing remains under the responsibility of women, we certainly move towards the realization of co-responsibility and equity, not only for the benefit of women, but also for the man open the possibilities of enriching their human experience through the encounter and the closest and intimate enjoyment with the children and the family.

It is imminent the emergence of a model that breaks with the archetype of traditional father to give way to a new strain of parents: the modern father more committed and active with upbringing and also enjoys the bond with his sons and daughters. A sociologists called Walter Kaufman identified three types dad - 'old dads', who change very little in terms of their attitude to parenting, 'new dads' who are more involved with their kids but are still mainly focused on work and what he called 'superdads' who full on go for it and become the primary child carers. I think i am a New Dad, trying to balance work with care.
