Bolt Of Energy
This highly charged lightning strike is seen hitting Capitol Butte in Sedona Arizona, Capitol Butte has the nickname Thunder Mountain. The massive lightning bolt was so loud it made me jump. It occurred during a summertime monsoon season thunderstorm, very heavy rain fell from this storm which resulted in a flash flood and caused major damage at a shopping plaza as the water overflowed the normally dry wash and managed to displace numerous cars in a parking area. Some of these storms can produce rainfall of over three inches in an hour.

Wow that's scary and you even jumped out of fright. and in spite of that you took a good picture.
Did you know that in order to know how far a lightning bolt falls, it is enough to count from the moment it is seen until it is heard? ... if it takes 5 seconds, the thunder is 5 km away
The sound of thunder travels at 1100 feet per second or about one mile in five seconds. Its dangerous to get these photographs but a thrill at the same time, i have had some close calls.

Wow that is an amazing photo! The lightning bolt itself looks really large in diameter, bigger than a house! A lightning bolt that large, if it hit in town somewhere, would probably obliterate half of a city block. Incredible!
Thanks scottrogers, LIghtning can be as hot as 54,000 degrees which expands and compresses the air around it creating a shock wave which produces thunder. The more intense the energy is the louder the sound will be. It appears larger than it really is.
I have been close enough to a lightning strike for these things to happen:
good story you were lucky you didn't get hit. If your hair stands up a lightning strike is imminent and you should lay flat on the ground. The sizzle was probably the leader going up from the ground to meet the one coming down from the cloud. lightning sprites are a recently discovered phenomena and is energy moving up out of the top of the thunderhead into the upper atmosphere at the same time a positive flash moves from the cloud to ground. Ha Ha good one, you must get some lightning with frontal storms but not like we get in Arizona especially during the summer months when we experience the North American Monsoon. The monsoon causes convective thunderstorms to develop which produce generous amounts of lightning as some of these storms remain stationary and drop localized heavy rainfall. Thanks!
