One Brilliant Moment _ The Sixth Sense (Scene Analysis)
Hello Steemians,
I hope everyone is doing great and I am just trying to keep up with my promise of daily writing. Well I know I had been lagging in on my work. But the good thing is I am working my ass off to stay on time.
Anyway, I had a great start with the M Night Shyamalan movie review, I started with the sixth sense and should be able to do another Shyamalan movie by Monday, After launching the Contest #6. You guys haven't been participating in my contest, Whats up with that? I am just kidding, I know you all are having your own worries to deal with. If you get time please do check out the inuke’s story writing challenge #5: What made you stay on Steemit?. Yup, There I go diverting from the topic again.
I believe is that each movie has a scene or shot which is above it own level. What I am basically saying is that movie even the bad one has its moment. It could be a comic or action sequence or could be anything that stands apart from the rest of the film.
Tonight I am going to discuss One Brilliant moment from the Movie The Sixth Sense. Before I proceed further here is a spoiler alert.
SPOILER ALERT: In this piece of article I will be putting forth my opinion on one of the movie scenes from the sixth sense and would discuss that in detail. I will not be reviewing the movie as that has already been done, But I would focus on a segment of the movie. There will be major plot point discussed here. So if you haven't seen the movie yet. I would recommend you to go and watch it.
There is no denying that this is one beautifully crafted movie. As if M Shyamalan had it reverse engineered or something. The movie seems to lack a connection at first, there will be a scene which makes no sense and even if you look at closely unless you won't be able to make any of it. Then the Shyamalan twist is dropped and all of sudden everything makes sense. From the establishing shot of Dr Malcome crowe played by Bruce willis getting shot, to the strange relationship and the wedding anniversary dinner in a hotel, or why Cole is acting so strange behavior. Everything is decently built around the twist.
But I will not be talking about the twist even though that is the brilliant one, I am going with another aspect of the movie the relationship between the central character Cole Sear played by Haley Joel Osment and his mother played by Toni Collette. The scene I am talking about is right after when Cole said goodbye to Dr Malcome (Who is still not aware of his status being deceased) the only person who know his secret of him being able to see and communicate with the ghost. And also knowing the fact that this is the last interaction between him and Dr Malcome.
The scene starts with what appears to be car mishap and there is traffic jam. You can hear people taking over when the camera move through the long queue of cars. And you can hear the discussion between Cole and his Mother before you can see them. With the mother expressing her concern over the accident
Geez, I hope nobody got hurt.
Followed by you are very quiet. She assumed that he is angry because she missed the play. But Cole denies that through a head nod. But she goes on to explain herself.
Now It may not look like much but if you have seen the movie you would have noticed the struggle Cole's Mother is putting as a single mother of a troubled child. She knows Cole is troubled but she can't get him open up to her. The attempts were made in past and failed as nothing that Cole has said made sense so far to her. So after a good 15sec of dilemma Cole says
I'm ready to communicate with you now.
To which the surprise of the mother is quite visible through her body language. She knows Cole has a secret, And Cole is also trying to tell her about this without her freaking out. Cole tells her about him being able to see the ghost and a lady has died in an accident. Without saying a word the worries of Cole's mother is clear on her face. And on top of that Cole ask the question.
What are you thinking, Mama? You think I'm a freak?
Now, this is coming a from a boy who sees ghost all around and is afraid of losing the only human who is close to him. While the mother even in such situation tells the Kid that It is fine, and assures him.
Look at my face. I would never think that about you. Ever. Got it?
Cole knowing that mother still doesn't trust him, Proceed with a crucial evidence which could prove his mother that the claims he is making are true. So he tells her about the Grandmother's visit. Now for the most of this part of the conversation, the camera stayed focus on the capturing her surprise and hurt as probably thinking why Cole is making up stories to cover up his mischievous acts that too involving his dead grandmother. But as the Cole reveals the details her eyes teared up as she believes on what Cole is trying to convey.
Here have a look at it.
One Brilliant Moment _ The Sixth Sense
Through the entire movie you see there two brilliantly played characters struggle with each other, The mother not being able to connect with the son. The Son who has a morbid secret and carries it around like burden. This scene for the first time probably in their lives bring them together. This doesn't necessarily mean that they found solutions but rather acknowledging the fact that they are not alone in this mess.
I am
and I speechless by the performances of these amazing actors.
I remember when we first saw this movie,
Although the whole movie is pretty good, This particular scene when Cole relays the answer from her grandmothers grave "every day",Was just brilliant it almost had me in tears...
