Mpemba Effect
You know its cold outside when you can teach your kids about the Mpemba effect with a cup of coffee! Can’t live though a Canadian winter without giving this classic shot a go. It was taken on a frozen Ness Lake in British Columbia. I have put the initial sequence below for people who have never seen this before, they were taken with a shutter speed of 1/800s. The Mpemba effect is a process in which hot water can freeze faster than cold water.

I am fairly mind blown with this. I haven’t heard of the Mpemba Effect until now but it’s a pretty crazy phenomenon, just spent the last 10 minutes reading about it on google haha

That is so cool - such a great fan of frozen coffee, it's like a firework! So how many tries did this take?
This was on the second try ! We rushed out to do this as I was worried we might not get below -20C again this winter. There is a so called pineapple express on the way and its going to be +10 next week .

Well, my compliments on making this work without too many repeat attempts, both to the photographer and the coffee-thrower!
It would have been better if we got up 30 min earlier and had lower light. But there was still some morning light in the spray; and I enjoyed my sleep in.
Oh well, at least you didn't have to use a higher ISO.
Yes and it looks a little different in this light to all the other sunrise shots.
