Thank you for your engaging and thought provoking post.

The search for happiness in one's life. Everyone wants to progress towards a happy and fulfilled life. But filling your life with things does not progress one toward happiness because there is always more. It takes more and more to fill the whole in one's self.

Contentment! Being content with one's self and what you have. Being content is a simple way to find happiness in one's life.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend and have a great week!

Yes, contentment even while in pursuit of things we find meaningful is probably the best recipe for a truly happy life. Also to be able to be content even during periods of no real progress instead of making up busy work to pretend at progress. Thanks for your comment.

I love that you wrote this. I used to be addicted to progress, i would frantically try to improve myself and in some ways it helped, I learned to languages. But now I don't force anything and I find I was driven by fear at that time. Now I'm driven by love and excitement and everything flows so much easier and enjoyably

"The root of all suffering is desire"

Consumerism is a subclass of this, as is achievement. Often the two are combined where buying supports the sense of achievement. Accumulation is likely ingrained into us, we have just extended it past developing useful skills and into irrelevant past times.

Knowing the price of everything, but experiencing the value of nothing. I think this is what happens when community ties break down. You get more freedom to define things for yourself, but tend to find those declarations to be rather fleeting and insecure.

I read post the other day and I meant to come back and comment. Since I read your post I have been contemplating our own projects. I am pretty good at resisting Impulse buys to fill some need, but I cannot resist a project full stop perhaps we just need to fulfill our creative brains. It does seem to be a human imperative. I do quite love the projects I undertake and it does seem to give our life a little meaning. Even my best friends who are very strong meditators in the Insight tradition still enjoy a project, even if it is just learning to make sourdough bread or to create a garden.

Perhaps it is creativity that when genuine is healthy, but when using fake substitutes like consumerism is unhealthy.

Totally. I watch the girls in my class online shopping and then teach mindfulness where I get them to observe sensation. There is the gap between sensation and action... i want them to SENSE that. To know what drives consumerism.

I was talking to a woman in the chemist about it the other day. I was after a plain, non alcoholic witch hazel. They didnt have it but she pointed me to a product masqueraded as natural, you know, a toner with rose and chamomile or something. I pointed out the rather long list of ingredients, including alcohol, and explained i wouldn't pay 5 times as much to a company trying to make me do so. I will wait for the witch hazel to arrive and put a couple of drops of lavender in myself. She was quite in admiration of my standpoint and said it made her think about how easily we fall for marketing.

I am kinda looking forward to a year with a dramatically reduced wage next year to go back to a more frugal life and even less likely to buy crap I dont need!

I honestly don't know if there is anything wrong with this addiction to progress we all seem to have.

i think this has quite some different aspects or types of people. For example there are some that keep talking about progress but actually doing nothing and just remain in words. Others take measures or try some ways in order to progress but maybe they are immature, maybe they don't pay that much attention or they actually don't want it, ending up with opposite results.

I think one healthy way to progress is having in mind that we are not only doing it for our sake but for the sake of people around us. That means both family and random ones.

For me too the greatest motivator to really progress is in finding new ways of benefiting others while also enjoying growth for myself. Maybe that’s the real progress and everything else is just a more easily accessible substitute.

i completely agree with you and it's also a win win situation!

Consumers = useless eaters.

I'll take stability over progress, especially if all progress means is acquiring more stuff that will just end up being someone else's trash.

So much of what people call progress is really just consumerism. The US has become a nation that seems to believe they have more significance as consumers than as citizens or even as people.
