Natural Medicine's 2019 Intentions : Our Food/Medicinal Forest Goal Continues...

in #naturalmedicine6 years ago

So far, the first moringa tree
is thriving, its' baby leaves sprouting and getting spoiled being watered twice a day. Although i've made it a point to fully water its' base on late afternoons as the soil gets so dry during the day.

Seeing two long moringa trunks yesterday I thought I can cut them to smaller pieces and perhaps start planting them. Scratching the surface confirmed that they are still viable and have not dried out. Hacking one with a cleaver, I think I got about 7 pieces in total, leaving the fatter bases for my brother to cut with a chainsaw. Believe me when I say that if I could carry that thing, the job could have been done yesterday. Anyway, I don't think that anyone in my household is taking me seriously.

Joy.

One down.

I did say that I have about 7 to re-plant? Yeah so from yesterday till today, a total of 6 were done, lining our backyard wall about 2ft away like a half-T shape to look nicer. Doesn't look like a forest for now but together with the rest it will be in the future.

I am focusing in one area in the backyard where numerous Aratiles or Muntingia Calabura are sprouting like crazy. We do have a lot of pigeons that maybe the culprits and the occasional bats that made this happen and it's a shame if most sprouts will be uprooted. I have one taker who wants 2 seedlings to plant in their farm. The electricity cables along our streets make it impossible to plant them there. In here at least, a couple is going somewhere.

All of these are Aratiles and although their trunk won't be huge, their dry leaves will be an eyesore, that I won't mind but my household do. I guess their medicinal value need to be emphasise more or if I will be in the country, they can be harvested and dried, making them a nutritional supplement. Or I can just be baking bread and mix those in the dough like a particular bakery in the country who bakes moringa roll?

A very much a possibility I think.

Perhaps I can make this as my 2019 intention if I will leave my job in London and stay in the Philippines for good? That's a thought.

These seedlings will be definitely pulled out as they're in a clearing or be given away if anyone wants them. I kinda dread doing it so I will leave my brother do the dirty job.

With best intentions, my mom needs these medicinal plants daily especially the moringa. With just 1 tree in the backyard, it's almost barren except those high-to-reach leaves. As a miracle tree for its' nutrients and vitamins, plus a source of protein, its' antioxidant property also need not be understimated and those newly planted ones musn't disappoint me.The health benefits of the aratiles with its' nitric oxide is quite something too.

Great possibilities ahead.

A food forest and at the same time medicinal sounds good, and if the mindset of my family will do a turn-around and embrace a healthier lifestyle, that would be much better.

This post is for @naturalmedicine's first challenge of the year "2019 Intentions".

I have been so interested in moringa the past few weeks and would love to try to plant one in my garden. I have heard though that they do not like cold weather. Our winters don't get cold enough for snow, but we do get frost in the mornings, with temperatures going down to -7 C. How are your winters?

Hi! The Philippines only have dry and wet seasons so we're spoiled in that regard. @gardenofeden in Texas have moringa and i think they cover the base with hay, this from memory so am not sure. California though have them as well so i think that so long as there's no snow? chat with @senorcoconut as he also plans to try moringa from New York. Best of luck!

I have a Moringa tree in a grow bag, that reminds me I need to upgrade the bag as the plant is bigger now.

Let us know how your cuttings are going

An arm-size cuttings more often have tiny leaves sprouting even if not planted, usually that's the hint to really plant them. I have a few thumb-size that am planning to bring to London come March. The last time i brought one, it didnt make it. Shoot, will let u know☺

Looks like a nice project.

that Muntingia's leaves look the same as strawberries but they don't grow as trees :-D

While am here nyways or leave it to thrive while am away.
I think it's also called the strawberry tree because of that☺

moringa rolls sound tasty! I often incorporate our medicinal plants and herbs into recipes -, especially with picky people. Great possibilities indeed - you have a beautiful plan and intention.

Thank you! A bakery here uses moringa already so am planning to include lemongrass for the smell and benefits. Or other stuff.
This can only be applicable if am in the country..or till when i'll come back. Really loads of possibilities and other intentions☺

Now I have to look into moringa. Thanks for the info... I don't think it will grow in New York if it normally grows in the Philippines!

It's the immortality tree accdg to the Nepalese, a miracle tree to some so definitely something..
It's tropical but @gardenofeden have it in texas, so they must be doing something right. California and hawaii have loads as their weather is similar...though somebody said it can thrive anywhere☺

Ok ok, good to know... I will habe to research that a bit, but it's a goid start. If it's Nepalese, it must be pretty hardy right?

Nepalese, Indian, Filipino...very tropical. It's not sturdy as i was whacking the trunk with a cleaver lolsss🤣🤣
Pls do check it out.
