What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism simply means taking the glory for somebody's work or idea. These is done by directly copying an article/post or photos of an author or photographer and pasting it on another platform as if it was written or taken by you without giving credit to the original writer or photographer. "An act or instance of using or closely imitating the language and thoughts of another author without authorization and the representation of that author's work as one's own, as by not crediting the original author." Source

These is similar to Piracy or copyright infringement which is punishable by the law. "Copyright infringement (colloquially referred to as piracy) is the use of works protected by copyright law without permission for a usage where such permission is required, thereby infringing certain exclusive rights granted to the copyright holder, such as the right to reproduce, distribute, display or perform the protected work, or to make derivative works." One of the Steemit Etiquette and Guideline which is number 4 on the list clearly states that;
"Don't be a fake, plagiarise or pass off others' work as your own".

There are 4 types of plagiarism as stated below:
1- Direct Plagiarism
This is the word-for-word copy and paste of a part of someone else’s work, with no attribution and quotation marks.

2-Self Plagiarism
These occurs when a someone(student) submits his or her own previous work, or add's parts of his former work, with no permission from the professors/lecturers involved.

3-Mosaic Plagiarism
This is when a student get's phrases from a source without using quotation marks, or finds similar words for the author’s language while using the same general structure and meaning of the original. Another name for it is “patch writing”

4-Accidental Plagiarism
These is when a person refuses to cite their sources, by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution.

Four steps on how to avoid plagiarism:
"1)Keep track of the sources you consult in your research.

2)Paraphrase or quote from your sources (and add your own ideas).

  1. Credit the original author in an in-text citation and reference list.

  2. Use a plagiarism checker before you submit."" Source

As a professional platforms made to promote and improve the writing skill of it's members while earning from it, they are totally against plagiarism and would penalize any member found wanting and going against their etiquette and guidelines. These is done to protect their image which is held on high esteem.
