Will Steemit Get The World's Vote?
Staying Power
As of now we are quickly approaching 1 million users. Now mind you, a vast majority of Steemit's growth has been organic. That's what should excite you the most. To organically build a social media site to nearly 1 million users is not something to just gloss over. I do not recall tons of money being dumped into marketing the platform to the mainstream. At least not yet. This will change this year I believe.
I personally believe in the longevity of the platform for a number of reasons I will mention shortly. The crazy thing is that we have had this much success and we are still in BETA. Now of course we will have competitors to the platform as well but that doesn't mean anything at the moment until those other platforms can actually hold their own weight for a while. I'm all for having other social media sites pop up. This will be a healthy thing for Steemit as I believe it will fuel the platform's growth rather than hurt it as some would say.
Reasons I believe in the longevity of Steemit:
- First Mover Advantage (Steemit has been around for a couple of years and has proven to work)
- Core Strength (highly committed and passionate core group of users)
- Steem & SBD (reliable and ridiculously fast underlying currencies)
- Contagious Culture (there is mostly positivity and good energy here)
- Organic Growth (it's only a matter of time before steemit inc decides to take Steemit to market with big marketing dollars)
- Well Known Content Creators (slowly more and more well known content creators along with their followers are finding their way to Steemit)
I say control what you can control and let the rest go. For now I am bullish on Steemit because of the reasons mentioned above. The next few years on Steemit could be the most exciting times of our lives or maybe it won't. But no one has a crystal ball. We are all just assuming, hunching, and speculating at the end of the day. Time will tell I guess. Much love and peace.

Folks, let's not kid ourselves. The reason steemit has gotten this far organically is because of the big fat carrot of a potential windfall of revenue being dangled out there in front of us that a few are already getting. But let's keep in mind that's also the main gripe everyone has that's still here, and the reason the vast majority of those 800K users are not active. The reason for it's success is the reason for our gripe: huge payouts! Why is that a problem? Because it's the same reason people with good content day after day are still only getting 10 views and 3 cents per post no matter if it takes 2 minutes to compose or 200 hours of research. The algorithm, controlled by the whales, is specifically designed to keep steempower and control in the hands of the few at the expense of the many.
What will change this dynamic and save the platform is the rise of a Middle Class who will actually get rewarded for their work. That might require a change in the algorithm which might weaken benefits to the Royalty. Problem is, it's the Royalty who control the vote.
See a problem here?
In my opinion, whales should be very concerned about distributing the payouts more evenly. It would benefit them too as it makes steemit more tempting and doesn't dry out. It means they will stay in power. If steemit will devastate it's users, eventually someone will create another platform for the demand and attract steemit users.
Those platforms are already in the works. It's just a matter of time. Time for Steemit Inc. to develop this platform into the best thing available. But they have no real incentive because their real money is in steem, not steemit, so they spend their time and resources on the utility of the blockchain, not on improving the user experience here.
Bingo! I agree with you @kirbyhopper. People come here to steemit because of the financial interest and many are already getting discourage because the effort they made are all in vain. And you are right about that 800K, most of them are not active.
Thanks @garokee. I just published I think would be an easy solution to all this: SteemShip Navigation - The Way Forward (Part 3) - Reward Value
@kirbyhopper. Spot on man. I have the same concerns and I have seen this myself. What would the rise of a middle class on Steemit look like as far as payouts go?
As I proposed here we do it through lending SP according to one's rise in reputation score since rep score is the best measure we have of actual value added to the community. There are 35,000 steemians who have a rep score in the 30's. Loan people 100 SP when they go from 30 to 31, another 100 SP when they go from 31 to 32, and so on until they reach 40. Allow them to use those 1000 SP as they rise from 40 to 50 and then call back the loans at a rate of 200 SP for each 1 point gain from 50 points onward until they pay it back, or if they become inactive call it in. Don't let them power down the SP that's on loan. If 35K all had 1000 SP loaned to them that's 35 Million total SP on loan. That can come from @steemit's account which right now has about twice that just sitting there.
What this does is enables talented, active, and dedicated users who are now spreading 1 penny's worth of love when they upvote to be spreading 50 cents per upvote. If we actually upvote quality then quality will get rewarded. I won't need to get a whale's upvote to get anywhere because my little band of middle classers has something to offer me by way of an upvote that actually does something for me. Now we just need to reduce the incentive to follow whales around and upvote them just because they are whales.
I haven't figured that part out. Ideas, anyone?
Seems like a legit option. Have you proposed this to any whales or developers?
This or something like it needs to happen. As far as people upvoting whales just for the sake of it I'm not sure. People follow the money mostly which is unfortunate.
Nope haven't proposed this yet.
@humanearl,
The Era of new social media just began with STEEM blockchain! This is unbeatable and we can see a huge enhancement of this technology in near future! Great discussion you wish to carry on!
Cheers~
Yes the steem blockchain is a leader in the cryptoworld for sure.
You said it Earl ! The Word ..
SMT.
Mini blockchains every where under Steemit is a Game changer.
Flowey/Team leader, myself and some business owners here locally are actively developing SMT.
I would love to have your support Earl :)
Great choice of topic on your vid..

Is that the SMT idea Flauwy mentioned on his topic of spirituality or are you talking about a different project?
I believe Flauwy was referring to a SMT/e-commerce type of dapp with in some cool spirit minded products. My project is a SMT local business community development inbedding proof of brain in all marketing,Websites, mobile dapps ect..Flauwy is a great software idealist and developer.I'm a boots on the ground community developer/curator.
Fluawy came up with APPICS to put in the mix,I totally forgotten about them. Now they joined Ned with the SMT token and it's the bomb!! So cool :).
Some people are saying it's in conflict with steemit, look at it this way,,Steemit is the Mother ship and we are the first curators,we are on the same team!
Like you said Earl This is going to be great year.
God bless dear brother :)

No matter how flawed Steemit might be, Steem is an incredible blockchain technology and there is no rival at sight - except for EOS but I doubt we will see a social media coin from there anytime soon. Steem is so versatile (not enough but that is a different topic) that we will see tons of new apps and websites using that system. Even more when SMT's are coming out.
Steem will explode in 2018 and draw much more attention - no ad campaigns required but will come on top of that. We will see how long this ride will go as I see potential for better platforms but they will need a long time. So in the next 3 years I see Steem clearly leading the race. In 5 years we might see better cryptos for social media which could take over.
Better cryptos for social media than Steemit? DTube alone has already attracted a lot of famous Youtubers and it will continue to do so as long as they censor & ban everything that doesn't fit their leftist worldview.
But you could be right. Technology is evolving faster than is good for us, in my opinion we have already reached a point where technology has damaged humanity.
When I see all the spiritually dead people outside I feel like I am in the wrong place.
True "progress" now would be to find answers to philosophical questions and to get back to the roots, in harmony with this planet again (as much as that is possible).
But that won't happen.
(that escalated quickly)
Hi @valorforfreedom
I too felt that many people going without spirituality in technology world. Not only that, many people mostly focus on false and graphical dirty stuff, and some others only go to worst places like hatred places etc.
On brighter side, I found great people who are strong and who only go with truth, and cannot fear to violated and hatred content on technology. I may explain more in my upcoming posts.
But yes, we should not loss hope that we will see healthy and good society even in technology world.
@flauwy I suspect the same for this year 2018.
@volorforfreedom The more info and tech we have the more depressed and depraved we become. Black Mirror in real life
I would love to think that Steemit has a bright future, but I also believe it depends on whether the voices of greed end up being allowed to dominate the voices of idealism. Anytime there is money (or "rewards") involved, there are always lots of people who arrive on the scene to exploit and get ahead, with little regard for the ecosystem they are using. Like a swarm of locusts, they don't really CARE whether their presence causes devastation and hunger for those who were dependent on the crops they just decimated.
On the whole, though, I feel hopeful that the sense of community among legitimate users with a vision for something greater for the world will persevere...
Bright Blessings!

Thank you for putting out my thoughts into words on this one. Greed is bad news for the success of this platform, and human beings being what they are, not everybody has good intentions.
Money is a double edge sword. It can change communities but it can also ravage them. And usually it's the latter.
If it could cause destructive disharmonies in families and tear even siblings apart...then i am afraid. Platforms like steemit have a lot of them parasites...and every time i wish they could channel this energy and time to something positive. I hope with time and with our collective efforts, steemit gets to set severe checks for these excesses.
Well, in my opinion as long as sagacious people like you are here on this amazing platform it surely will skyrocket to new heights in future. I have interacted dozens of sane, reasonable and industrious people putting up wonderful efforts to make Steemit a progressive and modern platform with so many things to learn.
Of course there are challenges and hurdles in every progressive initiative. Competition is good for growth. But with already enlightened souls present on steemit and intellectuals flocking towards this platform, it will scale new horizons for progress.
The key is that we together should put every effort possible to make this platform more progressive and enlightened. With so many hands putting together we can built a secure and stable future for ourselves and people to come.
Thank you @humanearl to show concern for this platform and people present here.
You always have amazing things to say and for that I give you a BIG thanks you. This is one of the strongest things Steemit has going for it that is unlike any other platform. The culture. It's just completely different.
I deeply inspired by your kind heart and mind. Your words are really encouraging for me. Thank you for appreciating:)
steemit is about being the most lasting and strong platform anyone can think of. It has not been around for long but the success it has reached so far is overwhelming. I tell a lot of people to see steemit as a varsity with departments and thousands of courses well functioning under it. I am a month old on steemit now, and i cannot say how amazed i have been with the everyday exposure i get being on this platform. I did a couple of visibility project about steemit on facebook and the turn out was massive.
The only stress i have now is approval of accounts on time so a lot of people can join the moving train on time. You say steemit should hit about 2million users by May, but i tell you, if the confirmation processes are sped up, Nigeria alone can give steemit 1 million users in no long time...that is how much the teaming populace out here is desperate to join this platform. And to think that steemit is barely 2 years but has a whoooooole lot of features to explore in a life time!
About steemit being surpassed by other platforms, that is almost impossible from a personal point of view. If at all there is going to be another platform(or platforms), which i do not even get so bothered about now, i hope they can handle the challenges and competition even half way before bowing out..?
Something in me keeps saying steemit is a forever thing...the more people get to join, the stronger it gets. The more the bond between users that ordinarily would never have met, the more immortal steemit gets. Now tell me, what's the possibility this heaven-sent platform doesn't stay on top forever?!?!
Thanks for your comment. They are planning on making the sign up process much better. I'm not sure when this will be done though.
Nigeria is all over steemit. I like that!
Thank you sir. I hope it doesn't take too long.
@humanearl I talk, drink, sleep, breathe steemit, i make sure i am steemit contagious anywhere, anytime. If the process is sped up, you will hear testimonies.
BTW, your baby is a sight to behold..i would like to see more of her on your DTUBE videos. I like the distraction i get when she is with you.
It just so happens that sometimes when she is with me she wants me to hold her. But I try to include her here and there.
Yes @humanearl
Nobody has a crystal ball to confirm the Steemit future.
Actually everybody of Steemit would have these doubts in mind even if they are succeed here. Hope God does help Steemit to exist forever.
The good point I noticed in your post is there maybe some other platforms overcome Steemit, but Steemit goes raising and strong even if there are higher platforms, and who asked us to sit at one platform.
We should give time to other platforms too along with Steemit. Then there will be no terrors.
Agree?
Yes I agree. Like I said you don;t only have to be on one platform. At the end of the day it is about the idealism all this cool tech represents.
Difficult to make predictions. However my opinion is that Steemit will grow. The underlying blockchain implementation will be its engine and will attract more and more people in the future. In particular bloggers seeking to monetize their content.
There is also an important investment done by Global Blockchain Technologies announces $20m fund to invest in Steem SMTs
So yes, I can say that steemit in the next years will be stronger and bigger. I wonder what effect this will have on the steem coin which powers the economic system under steemit !? But I think that the coin also will get its benefits in terms of value after the steemit growth and the release of SMT.
It is difficult for sure. I have some optimism though. Yes Steem will boom is SMT do extremely well. But it will take some time for things to really manifest with the SMT's. I think it will take at least one more year to see major results.
Personally, I do not see steemit going anywhere close to extinction or bring overpowered by other platforms, but those are just my own thoughts. As long as steem remains in the crypto market, steemit will continue to glow...
The fact that many other platforms and projects have been built on steemit is also the interesting and the source of confidence that I have on the platform. The scope keeps expanding daily.
Now, assuming it goes away, yes, many will be disappointed and depressed, but it will mean the developers got complacent at a point. It also means there will be the writing on the wall, other platforms would have sprung up and in strong competition before steemit can go down. As long as I see nothing like all these, steemit is just the safest place to be for me.
I can't wait to see how Smart Media Tokens do once they are released on a broad scale.
