They were the words, that sent fear and loathing through every cell of her body.

“He has them.”

Her legs gave way, as she crumpled to the floor in the phone box, tears gushing down the sides of her face. The new beginning was already a faded distant memory.

He had beaten her to it.

Somehow, he knew all along that she had been in contact with them and knew that this is where she’d be headed, so he had taken the liberty to take the twins back.

She berated herself for not getting there earlier, or last night. She should have planned harder, but it was no use now after the fact. She'd have to get even better at acting.

He must have known that would be the only thing to make her go back.

She would have to go back now, she had no choice.

She would have to protect them and one day get them away again, as well herself if she could, but how she could and would do that was a mystery right now, as she knew the ‘security’ would be tightened. In fact, she wouldn't be surprised if there was some kind of 'bodyguard', put in place to 'protect' her from herself.

She had no doubt that the twins would home-schooled, as there as no way he'd let them out of his beady eyes either, if it meant completely losing the person he could use as an emotional and physical punching bag. She could never let the twins be that venting post.

She knew that he wouldn't do it in front of them, just as he didn't when they were in the public eye. It would be the evenings when the twins were tucked up in bed that she would be subject to the whim of his mood.

She cried because now she knew that they were better off where they were and she had just made their little lives become witness to the tension of their parent’s interactions with each other. They might not see the evidence, but they would feel it.

Broken, all over again she gets into a taxi, knowing full well that he would pay the fare when she got to the other end and that she would pay in some way or another for her little escapade.

But she would get hold her twins again and that feeling bypassed everything and anything that he could do to her.

Clutching her locket, she smiled a bittersweet smile.
