Sweet Tasting Poison

in #control5 years ago

Remember how I told you I'd gone to the market yesterday? Yeah, after I finished being honked at by weirdos, I actually got to the store. Amazing, I know.

And one of the things that struck me as weird was the fruit section. I like fresh fruit (as much as the shit they sell at the supermarket can be labeled 'fresh fruit') and freshly-squeezed orange juice and things like that, so I figured I better buy some. Regard, if you will, the picture below.

See anything odd? No? Let me explain. Notice the difference in price for the big, yellowy oranges on the right and the bagged orange-y oranges on the left (I know, description skills through the roof, right?). The ones on the left are three times as expensive as the 'regular' ones on the left. Know why?

Because they boast of being 'untreated'. There is no trace of pesticides, as the bag boasts. And of course you can't trust that, but let's assume, for a second that is true. The oranges on the right are much less expensive, but they do have an underlined warning of "DO NOT EAT THE PEEL". If you need to underline an all-caps warning of that, it's fucking worrying.

Now, my grandmother used to put a little grated orange peel in cakes, back in the day. Now, you couldn't even dream of that. You know what they spray on those peels? If in doubt, check the underlined, all-caps warning again.

Pesticides are substances that are meant to control pests, including weeds. The term pesticide includes all of the following: herbicide, insecticides nematicide, molluscicide, piscicide, avicide, rodenticide, bactericide, insect repellent, animal repellent, antimicrobial, fungicide and disinfectant.

Typical of humans to think they're above rodents, fish, animals and insects...whatever kills them can't possibly damage us also, can it?

As with anything, people have gotten used to eating fruits and veggies most probably treated with poison. So, you wash it as best you can and hope you don't die and you usually don't. You peel it and hope the inside isn't too affected by the poison.

But you don't have to do that anymore. With the rise of 'bio' products or other such 'untreated' items, you can eat healthy again, with no increased risk of death. How swell is that? Of course, you have to pay three times extra for that. Don't wanna eat poison? Then you better pay up, biatch. Or it's back to the pesticides-insecticides-piscicides for you.

And people readily accept that. Why? Because people would basically accept anything. Whenever in doubt that the world around is turning to utter shit, just remember that people are willing accepting poisoned fruit. And I thought Snow White was dumb...
But then, what can you do? How can you fight back? By not buying the produce? Let's not kid ourselves, shall we? I really wish this could be a post that ended on a 'stand up, fight for yourself' note, but I don't think we're capable anymore. I think we're slowly sinking. So, this is just a post that notes the shitty state of the world we live in.

What's more, some people even pay for the "clean" expensive fruit, which in truth, probably isn't untreated and clean. But hey, if you're willing to pay three times more, who are they to refuse your hard-earned cash? I don't know which is sadder, really. That people believe the lie or that they really are "healthy" oranges and we have to basically buy our health or open up for a dollop of poison...

I buy only toilet rolls and refuse sacks in the supermarket. I don't believe they sell food.

Oh they don't. But they do make it increasingly hard to buy anywhere else...

Shit, we should just all eat locally grown veggies and fruits, that are in season. Oh wait, it's Finland and winter, I guess I'll dig some moss under the snow, like a moose. Fuck.

Okay okay, we have potatoes, and berries that have been picked last autumn and freezed. I'll be fine. Totally fine.

Frozen potato-berry milkshake, what more can you ask of life?

That's the problem really, the choice outside of big sellers is really fucking limited.

I'd like to think that in Finland, the regulations are so strict that we get foods that are not pure poison, but who the fuck knows really. I trust no-one.

ps. I still use lemon/orange peel for some baking, poisoning my guests (=myself, because loner life)

Haha I sometimes do, too. ;) But the truly excellent thing about chocolate cake - it doesn't need peel .It just needs chocolate.

but who the fuck knows really

Exactly. We know next to nothing about what goes into our food really. because who's going to come straight out and say 'it's poison, really'?

I so agree. Supermarkets lie at times just to sell something. They are claiming stuff to be organic just to increase the price but as a consumer we are not really sure of what they are claiming is true. This is why I just buy the regular stuff and wash it properly. And wish I will not die sooner.. lol.

The fresh produce in supermarkets is terrible. We go to a farmer's market and the produce tastes so much better and if far cheaper also.

I once got honked going to said market...I wasn't even dressed provocatively. ☺️

Hmm I don't know any markets in my area and since I don't drive, the.choices are pretty limited.

I wasn't even dressed provocatively.

And maybe that was your mistake...:P

Well, I was dressed like Selene from Underworld and STILL no honks. 🤣

The rule I follow is: don't use orange or lemon peel unless you KNOW it's organic. I'd say the same for eating apples with the peel on. As far as knowing it's organic, if like me, you live in a city and can't grow your own fruit and veg, your best bet is organic labels from a supermarket or,even better, order your organic veg box online.
