What if... | A WeekendFreewrite

in ART LOVERS5 years ago

Greetings, everyone
This is my second attempt at #WeekendFreewrite organized by @mariannewest. This time the prompts fit in more easily. For some reason a recent tragic even in Venezuelan politics came to my mind with the first prompt sentence. We have a lot of "what ifs" that unfortunatelly have taught nothing to both politicians/military and people in general. Mistakes and betrayals keep befalling and people's lives keep being ruined. We don't know who to trust anymore and can only in retrospect fancy a different, more just, outcome.

What if...

The big what if. Would he have gone there anyway?

He knew he would’t have. His thirst for justice was greater than his thirst for blood. He enjoyed killing, but his greater satisfaction was killing for a good reason, for a good cause even.
But he was following orders, allegedly on good intel; he could not take back what he had done. He had killed the wrong people for the wrong reasons and now his world was going down the drain.

The survivors of the Freedom Road movement were now spread all over the world with little chance of being heard or supported by those that mattered because it was the leaders of those powerful sponsors that matter the ones responsible for the big disaster.

His country was now being ruled by the very people who had contributed to its destruction from behind the curtains and had sold whatever was left of it to the most contradictory combination of interests imaginable.
He felt he had one more chance to vindicate himself or at least even the odds of things getting any better.

Restless from exhaustion, everyone was wakeful on the second night.

Oscar and his closest collaborators had been told a mole in FR had given up their location. They left the house in a rush, but he made sure to turn it into a time bomb first. They barely had time to move to a nearby refuge and from there they would see what was planned for them. If the attack took place, then it was a fact that they could not trust their leaders and they’d have to do something about it.

Lisa, the only woman in the group was in charge of monitoring all the communication traffic. She made sure all their devices were off the grid and she had all the government’s military forces tracked.

-They’re not sending their official cavalry. Can anyone get me some coffee or a drink?
-Do you want a mocha or a cappuccino? Jay sked mockingly. They had not eaten much in the last 48 hours and they did not have time to pack any amenities.
-There’s some movement down the hill, —Abe alerted. –No military vehicles, but way too many vehicles to pass for tourists.

She suddenly bared her teeth.
-I got you mother fuckers! Lisa snarled.
-They’ll make it look as some kind of narco confrontation. Where did they get these guys from? Oscar asked.
-I don’t know. They must be FARC or ELN. Dan responded
-Let them get closer and hit them with all we have. Oscar commanded.
-Sure thing. Call our angel. Thank him for the tip. Should we green light the elimination of all compromised leaders?

-Why not? Let’s burry them on the date they set for us.

More than fifteen vehicles and about a hundred heavily armed men had surrounded the big house on the hill from all fronts. Even though they could have negotiated a surrender, their orders were to kill them all. But now from the neighboring hill and thanks to an anonymous insider’s call, Oscar had the chance to blow them all up and make a statement that would hopefully inspire more freedom fighters.
They heard the first barrage.
-Now! Oscar said, and all hell broke loose.
