Misnomer (?)

Greetings, everyone

Logo-Discord_1203489642_125176_1440x600.jpg

Have you wondered why we call the forums where we are supposed to socialize, make alliances, create and consolidate projects, and get to know people and cultures Discord?

I know, we had the tool named already; but still.

I had not thought about this until I found myself trying to offer @r2cornell some suggestions and feedback on his bilingual posts. He has been doing an amazing job reaching out to the Spanish-speaking community on Steemit and I have enjoyed his post even before he started to publish in both English and Spanish. The thing is that when it comes to the word Discord, like many other Anglicism, we tend to not translate it (like we did with fax, bus, ticket, taxi and many other words). When I read the word in translation it makes me think about it as a misnomer.

In Spanish (as I am sure it also happens in English), “discord” (discordia) has a bunch of negative meanings along the lines of conflict, friction, hostility, clashing, quarrel, disagreement, dispute, argument, disunion, discrepancy, difference, opposition, or inconformity.

I read a little bit about the origin of this program or application and I understand it was developed by Jason Citron and initially intended for gamers. Maybe the competitive nature of the initial use it was put to made it a nice fit. But, when I read in Spanish búscanos en el canal de Discordia (find us on Discord), it sounds like the school bully challenges: “we’ll settle this in recess or after school.” ### How does Discord sound in your native language?

There is even a goodness of strife and discord. Her name is Eris (Discordia in Roman mythology)

Source

And hateful Eris bore painful Ponos ("Hardship"),
Lethe ("Forgetfulness") and Limos ("Starvation") and the tearful Algea ("Pains"), Hysminai ("Battles"), Makhai ("Wars"), Phonoi ("Murders"), and Androktasiai ("Manslaughters"); Neikea ("Quarrels"), Pseudea ("Lies"), Logoi ("Stories"), Amphillogiai ("Disputes"), Dysnomia ("Anarchy") and Ate ("Ruin"), near one another, and Horkos ("Oath"), who most afflicts men on earth.

That’s a horrendous family tree, don’t you think?

I know that some Discord channels have actually served as scenario for some really ugly fights, but that is not what usually happens in these forums. Thus, I wonder, should we rebaptize these channels, refer to them in a more friendly manner?
Just a thought.

Should we call it

Concord?

Concordia?

Dialogue?

Accord?

Or simply

Cord?

I like Cord. We can associate it with friendship and bonds, links, ties, connections, collaborations, partnerships; more along the lines of what Steemit and the Blockchain in general should be all about, don't you think?

@hlezama,

Henrry, I made the same observation when I first started on Steemit ... "Discord, why would they call it that?" I suspect someone was trying to be "edgy" which is a big thing in advertising these days. As P.T. Barnum once said, "If you want to draw a crowd, start a fight."

Personally, I think the strategy is a bit silly. With everyone trying to sound edgy about everything, edginess has lost its cachet. And, in the day and age of Twitter, millions of people getting together to argue about everything (as is suggested by the word, "discord") isn't particularly unique or defining. It's more ordinary than extraordinary.

Given that so many people now know the brand name though, I doubt the powers that be would ever consider changing it.

Quill

Hi, Quill.
Yes, I know that actually changing the name is not an option.
A brand is a brand and this one has been widely adopted.
That being said, some products have been re-branded (Instagram, formerly known as Burbn; Dunkin', formerly Dunkin' Donuts; LG, Lucky and GoldStar; 7Eleven, formerly known as Tote'm, Google, formerly known as BackRub). Who knows, maybe in the name of political correctness and harmonious language that promotes acceptance rather than conflict we get this one to make some adjustment. :)

I agree with you ... it took me FOREVER to join Discord because there has been so much "discord" in the world right now... I like Cord!

:) Thanks for stopping by, @deeanndmathews

Nice to point out. Well, it sounds the same, the concept is quite familiar to most, I guess, although I just don't pay attention. I also joined it as a gamer, but hadn't used it really before joining Steem. I look on the fun side of it.

In quarrel the truth is born — that's also a thing in my language ;)

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I guess there are good things that emerge from confrontations, truths, as you say. In the heat of an argument people tend to reveal what they easily hide under regular circumstances.

I had exactly the same reaction when I was invited to join Discord. It seemed to be a contradition in terms because it has, for me, exactly the negative connotations you mention. I guess we're saddled with it. Unless it re-brands itself. I'm not a gamer. I abhor violence. I avoid confrontation. So.

Me too. I feel so unconfortable when I enter a Discord room and there is an argument going on. Arguments (especially of the heated kind) are a risky business in the real world, the more so here where we know little about most users. There is also a certain level of impunity here that along with anonymity makes confrontations even riskier.

I couln't agree more.

There is also a certain level of impunity here that along with anonymity makes confrontations even riskier.

Again, I couldn't agree more and I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that people tend to forget that "inside" that computer screen, behind that name, is a warm-blooded, feeling human being.

Thank you for the mention.. Not too long ago a follower did a painting/drawing of me and I was trying to say in Spanish "I am honored"...If I recall it came out in Spanish that I was insulted. Luckily this followers wife approached me, because she did not believe that I meant insulted. Now after I translate to Spanish, I use a different software to translate back into English ti make sure I am conveying the correct meaning.

Hahaha. That happens a lot with us, spanish speakers and the false cognates.
We say terrible, when we mean terrific
or fool, when we mean full
or assist, when we mean attend
