VLOG 29: Three Reasons to Feel Gratitude as a Musician in 2017

in #music7 years ago

The daily news cycle always spins us into a frenzy... terror, war, anxiety... but we have so much to be grateful for.

As musicians, even more so. We have affordable instruments, affordable recording gear, affordable means to tour.

We have the luxuries of modern life enabling the sort of high-octane, nomadic lifestyle that was ludicrous just a few centuries ago.

This is amazing, but it's easy to forget. You can lose sight in the daily hustle, the grind is stressful.

So my video today is a reminder and a healthy, happy start to the week.

What makes you feel grateful?

Thanks man. Upped. That factoid about cymbals is nuts, great snippet!

The rise of DIY music is huge imo. Artists like The Mountain Goats, Bonnie Prince Billy, and Car Seat Headrest, not to mention one of my favourite bands Flying Saucer Attack... they all made classic/cult classic records with the most basic recording equipment.

I'm even more grateful for the fact that allthough the audio quality is low for some of these records, they sound great. The fuzz and tape hum adds extra textures to the sound. When I make music on Logic Pro I'm always frustrated by how clean and perfect it all sounds. That's what they call "a good problem to have".

Always loved Flying Saucer Attack's cover version of Suede's "The Drowners".

Brilliant.

Yeah it's a cracker. Always good to find a fellow FSA fan :)

Hell yeah! I've heard all the bands in your post except for Flying Saucer Attack, the song that linked is cool. It's a blend of shoegaze and that raw indie rock, like somewhere between MBV and Guided By Voices.

GBV are another band I think that really pushed the home studio / lo-fi aesthetic to the limit... and rightfully had a lot of success in the process!

Nowadays its weird tho - the "DIY" movement has changed from lofi rock to super clean electronic beats, haha. But I think theres a movement of lo-fi jazzy beat tapes that kinda follows the spiritual idea of it - like this dude's channel https://www.youtube.com/user/562Steezy

Awesome, yeah that's a very good point about the new lo-fi is hi-fi ;)

Will check out GBV, I'm aware of them but not that familiar with their stuff.

dude, so good! this is one of the "hits"

Yes! Thank you for reminding us musicians of things to be grateful for.

Also, now is a wonderful time for musicians to exist without a label or contract. When Chance the Rapper can win a Grammy without being signed, when we can play music on many bustling streets for some donations, and when we have the Internet to reach audiences across the world, how can we not be grateful?

Ya Chance is a really inspiring dude! I want to read up/listen more on what he's done, I don't really know any of his music.

I just started making music again after years of being too sick to do so. Thought it was all over for me. Anyway, 4 weeks ago i contacted this guy who i knew wanted a trombonist (knew nothing about him),and said I'd been out the game for a while but was back in the business. Turns out he's not just exceptionally talented but a lovely person.... and suddenly... off to england to play a festival next week and a musically packed diary. Music. Never leaves you once you've got it. Best language to learn ever.

That's awesome that you were able to get right back into it with your music career! I've found that the only thing I lose is some of my muscle strength, as a drummer it takes time to regain speed/endurance for me. But maybe trombone is different?

No trombone's a nightmare. Is coming back faster than i expected but very limited on practice cos still struggling with health. I'll be posting band stuff on my blog next couple of weeks. It's hiphop reggae stuff. Very cool. Lead guy a talented poet. :)

Ahh yea I can imagine that. Good luck!
