Missouri Wildflower Series - Great Blue Lobelia
Lobelia siphilitica
This flower is one of my favorites. Great Blue Lobelia can get up to three feet tall and blooms from August to October.
Native Americans used the root in love potions. According to Ozark Wildflowers by Don Kurz, "The root was finely chopped and mixed into the food of a quarrelsome couple without their knowledge." It was thought it could make them love one another again and prevent divorce.
Some tribes also used it to treat syphilis, colds, fevers, upset stomachs, internal parasites, croup, and nosebleeds.
Thanks for looking! Stay tuned!

WHAT a beautiful picture of the flower!
And I love the folklore... (is that the correct word?) you added... it's the love potion root!

I hav several of these blooming in my yard right now! They're really easy to grow from seed. I would love to add the red one..Lobelia cardinalis. Hopefully next year.
Those grow wild here as well! But they bloom earlier than the Great Blue Lobelia. I'd love to see photos of your flowers!
