On any given individual, we can find a basal metabolic rate which is the minimum amount of calories we "use" on average on a given day. This can vary for people depending on their athletic ability, size and general metabolism but on average, a female burns about 1500 kcals a day, and a male 2500 kcals a day.
By eating exactly those numbers of calories a day, we are maintaining our weight.
