This past Sunday, I posted my 10th full podcast episode of HanSpot (한 스팟). I started the podcast miniseries exclusively on Steemit and have been presenting one almost every week for the past 3 months. For all production and presentation, I've fully transitioned from presenting on Facebook etc. to Steemit.

And I'll be damned, it has been an incredible experience.

Here's why – I realized that so many podcasts just want to shove their content down the throats of their audience. They force their popularity and its a giant rat race of who get's your cheese first. It's the equivalent of a 'selfie' for content.

When my wife and I started Hansik House in early '16, I didn't want to just spew our thoughts onto the digital airwaves. I wanted real talk to motivate real revolution. South Korea's cultural health right now is in a very dangerous spot and I knew that without some honest discussion, things were not about to get any better. A few months after starting this self-driven podcast in my grad-school apartment living room on a Blue Yeti microphone we got as a Black Friday deal... I was introduced to Steemit.

• It was getting too comfortable back here...

Today I want to celebrate a bit on why this has been a huge deal for me and the purpose of my work in relation to Korea. This podcast might sound like a fun diversions sometimes but the real purpose goes much deeper and I want to share those inside ruminations with you in case you're also an individual who might want to use this platform to enact change in the world.

Presenting a Problem

Cultural problems never have an easy solution. You can't just replace a wire or reset a router. Tackling any real problem that deals with life-satisfaction, mental health, social inclusion, and so on requires some deep digging and painful operations.

I started posting full explanations and contextualizations on Steemit alongside my broadcasts. I wanted everyone to know the unspoken obstacles of Korea's culture today as I fully believe that many other ethnicities and communities face similar challenges. I wanted to places these problems in the forefront of my discussion, not sweep it under the rug as so many do.

My listenership grew from a few dozen into the hundreds. I've taken topics that I only used to discuss privately between friends and put them on an international stage. I knew it was time to decentralize the discussion and motivate real action.

In this process I understood that for a while, I was hiding behind the convenient and comfortable buffer zone of my mic. I had this implicit protection of talking one-way and not really worrying what the reception would be.

Steemit was obviously different. There was pushback, there was questioning. I had less “listeners” and more constituents. Many of my listeners and readers are people dealing with the very societal problems I delve into. Being misinformed, incorrect, unproductively biased, or comfortable to just talk about it were not options.

In most recent weeks, I've been grinding more and more gears to see what I can really achieve with the Steemit community. Can we collectively throw a giant rock into the tide of culture? I am increasingly confident that we can and I intend to make these coming months count as it pertains to Hansik House's impact on the way we treat (or refrain from) cultural impact.

Turning Talk into Action

In just a few short months, my engagement and level of personal investment has progressed at an incredible pace. My Facebook posts had absolutely no interaction. Facebook 'Friends' (most of whom are unaware of the actual work I do) seem to simply brush aside the content has my little hobby. Already, my transition to Steemit has nurtured real discussion and I'm not going back.

You'll be seeing a lot more from HanSpot in the coming months. We'll be moving away from only doing weekly words and will start incorporating Steemit community collaborations and physical projects. After several months on Steemit, I'm about to hit the 1000 follower mark, many of whom are itching for some new cultural endeavors.
