How this technique works
1. Follow thousands of people in hope that they will follow back in return
2. Some people do follow back (in-fact a lot do!)
3. After a few days or weeks simply unfollow all users you had followed
This makes their followers numbers more than following and to a newbie user visiting the profile, it seems that these are really popular users.
Steemit is very different from the typical Social Networks and we all know it. With this report, I am not trying to point any fingers and you may have legitimate reasons to unfollow people in thousands! I am just trying to bring more transparency in the platform. The aim is to make aware and discourage people from using such practices which otherwise work perfectly on other closed Social Platforms!

very sad to say that some people are actually using this system as a game!
they use various bots(not all) for the motive of earning,
I recently heard that someone with the same practice as above had somehow managed to gain 10,000 followers and then started business for the resteem !!

Thanks @aashishkandel . You are right there are many people who have now started asking money from other users to resteem their posts. Resteem.Com and resteemexposure.com are some of them!!
It is amazing how each day you find the same thing. Over and over, people gaming the system.
This is really sad when there are so many people truly trying to increase their accounts and make a positive difference.

That's how Twitter and Instagram work. Not sure how people assume that on Steemit, where every transaction is clearly recorded and available without undue and expensive external services, the same racked would work.
